You were always working and took such good care of me and mom. I Cherish the time we spent together. I miss you 😢 💔 by @pamdemonium68

Today is Barbara’s yahrzeit.

She was my mother’s best friend, my best friend’s mother, and one of the people who helped take care of me when I was a child.

Often when she bought a coat or winter boots for her daughter, she bought them for me as well. When I was sick, she showed up with Colorforms and 7-Up. She was generous in that particular, immediate way that makes a child understand that she matters.

And then I grew up, and Barbara and I became friends in our own right.

After my mother died, we talked all the time. We shopped together. And when I moved away for graduate school, there were weekly or biweekly phone calls. I knew her laughter, her absolute delight in seeing movie stars, her love of buffets and shopping and souvenirs. And that bag of hers. Barbara always seemed to have exactly what somebody needed tucked away in there somewhere. She really should have gotten on The Price Is Right.

And I still experience her in me, in the ways I try to show up in the world.

When I feel the impulse to be generous. In the way I want people who come into our home to feel cared for and loved. In my loyalty to friends and family. In wanting to show up and simply be there when someone I love needs me.

And when I manage to do those things well, I hope there is a little of Barbara in me. I hope I learned something from the way she moved through the world, from the enormous generosity and love she offered so naturally.

I miss you, Barbara Ader.

And I am so grateful that of all the people who might have crossed my path in this life, you were one of the people who helped raise me, befriended me, loved me, and hopefully left some of yourself behind in me.

May your memory always be a blessing. by @pamdemonium68
