Hey friends, what's going on? I've been on my feet all day @wirralmakefest - it's been a good day, busy and hard work, but lots of visitors both interested and interesting. I had a little dye experiment going on, and this display of three different versions of #garlicmustard aka #jackbythehedge that I've worked on this week. A local ranger stopped by and ran the bright green one through his Nature City app which correctly identified the plant - winner!

Lots of you asked about classes and I found myself explaining my new class using these three as an example - it's about experimenting, trying on different materials and techniques - basically what I want to do with #formandfreedom is share my methods with you - how I look at the plants, what needs figuring out, how something as simple as scrunching up paper and painting it can give the effect of a textured leaf. I know it's not just me who looks at plants and flowers and wonders "how can I make it look like that?!". If this sounds like you, come and make flowers with me. Hoylake, 20th May, all day, £95 includes lunch and cake and all materials. I can't wait!

Let me introduce myself. If you are new around here - hello! I'm Ling (it's a flower name). I've given myself the title Paper Botanist - it feels like the best expression of who and what I am and do. I have a deep, feeling relationship with plants and trees, particularly native residents of woodland and hedgerow, wayside and thorny scrub. I'm talking hawthorn, cow parsley, Yorkshire fog, bracken, willow, foxglove, forget-me-not, honeysuckle, dog rose. Oh, and dandelion, campion, stitchwort, goose grass, garlic mustard, beech....a long and never ending list of dear old friends I greet as we meet in the mornings, walking familiar paths. Did I mention nettle and bramble?

When I'm not out visiting with my green friends, I'm at my workbench, studying, drawing, putting together paper macquettes in my quest to celebrate these amazing wonders of nature with mixed media sculpture. Or I'm sharing the wonder with others, teaching classes combining #paperart and #botany

I'm a teacher, a mother, daughter, sister, wife, neighbour. Friend, enemy, fighter. Danish, English. Old and young, curious and scared. Hopeful. A believer. I believe that plants are the most important thing. We get literally everything we need from plants and yet many of us don't even see them. I try to change that. Thanks for being here. How do you get on with plants? Please tell me in the comments 💚🌿

I've been teaching paper flowers for years. Every class has steps, a sequence, a single right way to make this flower in this paper.

Form & Freedom starts somewhere different.

We'll spend the day with wildflowers — beginning with corn poppies — and instead of following instructions, we'll look. Really look. Then make something that reflects what you see. Different papers, different techniques, different relationships with colour. Everyone in the room will be working from the same flower, but arriving somewhere completely their own.

I want this to become a monthly thing, a small group tracking the year in wildflowers together.

The first one is 20th May. Six places left, £95. Lunch, cake and all materials included.

Link in bio to book.

Hey Insta friends, how is your Sunday? I'm back up in Scotland with my dad. We've been going through mold sketchbooks and I am taking great joy and comfort from seeing how he and I have spent time studying and getting to know the same things. We laugh about it. I love him and he loves me.

Here, white deadnettle / archangel / lamium album. Sketches, John Warlow, late 1960s. Paper #lingwarlowpaperbotanist 2022-24.

So I am being a little bit naughty right now... I am halfway through an online class and I've switched my camera off because I want to tell you about it.

It's my monthly meeting with @thedesigntrust as part of their #dreamplando series. I booked it on a whim just before new year and did the three-day planning festival in January. It was absolutely fantastic and has made such a big difference in my business. I know they're about to launch next year's workshop series (I think Wednesday next week) so if you are looking for something to keep you on track, motivate you, connect you with other creatives, this is it.

DreamPlanDo has really helped me think, both seriously and constructively about my why. I'm pretty clear on my why anyway, but going through this process has given me so much more clarity in my decision making and - I genuinely believe as a direct result - I've had a great year (despite personal challenges).

The pictures are from a photo shoot I had earlier this year with the lovely @kerryn_grady_creative - also highly recommended 💚🌿

@amshepherd4

My why is all about promoting wildflowers, encouraging people to look more closely at the natural world

Flowering grasses and plantain - not all flowers have petals!

I made these in April, when the violets were flowering, and lovely Jackie brought real violets in for my evening class - nothing like a life model to work from!

Happy Saturday!🌸🦋

If you’re looking for a little weekend creativity we’ve had a lovely new delivery of paper craft kits from Ling Warlow, the artist and paper botanist behind Paper by Dragonfly, including some beautiful new butterflies!
Ling’s work celebrates the flowers and wildlife we often pass without a second glance. Inspired by the wildflowers growing in our hedgerows and along our favourite walks, her kits encourage us to take a closer look at the nature around us.

Ling’s work has also taken her to some wonderful places, including commissions for ITV and National Museums Liverpool, with her paper botanical work exhibited at the Design Museum in London.

•

Each kit offers the chance to create something beautiful by hand, from delicate paper wildflowers to colourful butterflies. A lovely way to spend an afternoon getting creative and appreciating the smaller details of nature.

•

We have a selection of Ling’s kits available in the gallery at the moment, so pop in and have a look next time you’re in Keswick! They’re also available to browse and purchase on our website. We’ll pop a link in our stories🤍

Trusting not only my gut instinct but also my WHY - the foundation, the underpinnings, the reason I do this - I took my framed paper nettles to #gnccfmcr26 last week and the love for the nettles was wonderful to behold 😍 Nettles are gone, Field Maple is sold, but Dog Rose, Oak, Wood Anemone and Nasturtium are still available, further details available on request.

I didn't even have time to photograph my nettles properly! The main image was taken by @thedesigntrust on the day (thank you Patricia ❤️)

It was a wonderful weekend. I'm back off up to Scotland tomorrow and looking forward to hunkering down in the warm and making more woodland, wayside and hedgerow plants and flowers 💚🌿
