British Academy Conference; Reinterpreting History and Memory: Contemporary Art of MENA (Part 1) | 2024

- Hamid Keshmirshekan
@hamidkeshmirshekan

“This British Academy international conference will explore how history and memory is reflected through contemporary art in the MENA region, and art’s association with broader social and intellectual practices.

It will examine the possibility of challenging the present through the reinterpretation of history, exploring the enduring and collective impact of recent traumatic memories. The focus will be on art closely linked with activism, both within the region and among the global diaspora, examining the strategies used by artists to critically reimagine both the distant and recent past; a past that no longer exists but continues to haunt the present.
The conference also explores how these artworks challenge and address current affairs in the context of historical narratives. By bringing together academics and professionals from diverse disciplines, the conference will provide an interdisciplinary framework for studying contemporary art, shedding light on the connection between art discourse, politics, and culture in the MENA region today.”

-Iranian Contemporary Art: Re-Positioning History and Cultural Memory
Editor: Hamid Keshmirshekan

-Rewriting history: a conversation between Parham Taghioff and Hamidreza Karami

-ABSTRACT
This illustrated conversation between Parham Taghioff and Hamidreza Karami focuses on Taghioff’s profound engagement with history and the philosophy of history within his photographic projects. The dialogue explores how Taghioff’s work reveals the common tendency for individuals to unwittingly cast themselves as characters in the historical drama without a conscious understanding of their roles. Key projects, such as the ‘Hands On/Hands Off’ (2014) and the ‘Asymmetrical Authority’ series (2018), are discussed, emphasising the artist’s reliance on personal historical understanding and historical memory. Taghioff highlights the dynamic nature of historical comprehension, stressing that continual emergence of new facts, documents and narratives prevents a definitive understanding of the past. The conversation also touches on Taghioff’s perspective as a contemporary artist in Iran, highlighting the need to examine history to grasp one’s contemporary position. The conversation concludes with insights into Taghioff’s artistic methodology, involving the analysis and use of archival materials, texts and images to reconstruct and critically examine various historical perspectives.

From Sunflower Seeds to the State of Exception: Ai Weiwei and the Political

In Sunflower Seeds, Ai Weiwei’s 2010 installation at Tate Modern, one hundred million porcelain seeds appear almost uniform from a distance; yet each was handcrafted and painted. The sunflower is not neutral: in Mao-era propaganda, Mao was the sun and the people sunflowers turning toward him. Ai turns this collective symbol into millions of singular parts.

Ten years later, writing in The Art Newspaper, Ai points to a paradox: the same system that helped the crisis spread through suppressed information also displayed its power through lockdowns, movement restrictions, and control of public opinion, while many free societies reacted slowly.

Covid revealed who, in an emergency, can suspend ordinary life, close borders, restrict movement, and set aside normal rules in the name of necessity. The health crisis thus becomes a question of sovereignty.

This is where Carl Schmitt becomes relevant. He distinguished liberal limits on power, individual rights, and pluralism from the democratic formation of collective political will. Crisis exposes this tension when protecting society requires restricting freedoms and ordinary legal procedures. Covid thus revealed the tension between a liberal-legal order and decision under exceptional conditions.

Ai goes further. In his view, the Western assumption that integrating China into global capitalism would eventually produce political liberalization has collapsed. He writes: “The real ideological war has just begun, and the Covid-19 outbreak is only a starting point.”

In 2026, that sentence sounds less temporary. China–West competition spans trade, technology, security, and space, while digital surveillance is no longer confined to authoritarianism. What appeared during Covid as an “exception” increasingly belongs to contemporary political logic.

Sunflower Seeds did not predict Covid; it visualized a persistent problem: the individual within the mass, the mass in relation to power, and power when ordinary order no longer suffices.

National Collection # 2 | Melli Shoes | Photographs | Parham Taghioff | 2022.

"...Melli is a word that has been repeated on shopfronts, on factory walls and across the body of the city, yet the fate of Melli Shoes shows how this very word slowly empties out and turns into a cover for the concentration of power. What begins in the realm of individual effort and creativity is transformed, in official language, into a “national achievement” and, ultimately – under the slogan of “belonging to everyone” – is handed over to abstract, faceless institutions: the state, organisations, funds. Melli becomes a pretext for separating ownership and responsibility from the concrete faces of real people, dissolving them into the fog of general concepts; what is declared “national” is, in practice, transferred into the sacred, untouchable domain of power and control."

*Note on “melli” for non-Persian readers: I have kept the Persian word melli alongside “national” because, in Iran, it carries a dense historical charge – from “National Oil” to “National Shoes” – where the line between “of the people” and “of the state” is always unstable.

Hélène Binet: Photography as an Interpretation of Architecture

Hélène Binet is one of the most significant figures in contemporary architectural photography. From John Hejduk to Peter Zumthor, Zaha Hadid, and Daniel Libeskind, a central question runs through her work: How can spatial experience be translated into an image?

To describe Binet simply as a photographer of architectural details would be reductive. Her photographs move between overall views, interiors, spatial sequences, and fragments. What matters is not the choice between whole and detail, but finding the position from which a particular quality of architecture can be revealed.

For Binet, the frame is not merely a boundary. Light, shadow, material, distance, and viewpoint reorganize space and create a distinctly photographic experience of architecture.

Her way of seeing changes with each building: in Zumthor, weight, stillness, and material presence; in Hadid, movement and continuity of surfaces; in Libeskind, rupture, void, and spatial uncertainty. Her visual language emerges not from imposing a fixed style, but from a dialogue between the photographer’s gaze and the internal logic of architecture.

The title of her book Composing Space is revealing. Binet does not simply photograph space; she recomposes it through selection, omission, and framing.

In her work, the photographer is not an invisible intermediary, but an active agent in reading and interpreting architecture. The photograph becomes an encounter between the architect’s way of seeing and the photographer’s.

Perhaps this is the lasting significance of Hélène Binet’s work: architectural photography can become a way of discovering and reading architecture anew.

With respect and admiration, dedicated to Hélène Binet. @binet.helene

‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪@memar.resaneh‬‪@archmdia‬ia‬ia‬ .

این تصویر با عنوان Salk Institute exterior concrete stair towers در وب‌سایت Life of an Architect منتشر شده و او صراحتاً می‌گوید که عکس‌هایی را که در بازدید خودش از Salk گرفته به اشتراک می‌گذارد.
