15 minutes with the legendary Dr. Funkenstein, George Clinton, whose paintings are exhibited in "Mothership" at the Mariane Ibrahim gallery. Reporter @miss_ethompson writes on the @chicagosuntimes: Though he is colorblind, he has created a variety of vibrant motherships using acrylic, spray paint and charcoal. The exhibit even includes a tiny replica of the iconic, $500,000 spaceship that he debuted on his P-Funk Earth Tour in 1976. Building upon the universe he created as the leader of Parliament-Funkadelic, his visual art underscores his contribution to Afrofuturism, a cultural movement that envisions a future of liberation for Black people. “He is a pre-internet architect of Afrofuturism vocabulary and imagery,” said Mariane Ibrahim, a French-Somali gallerist who also owns spaces in Paris and Mexico City. “To think about Black bodies in the cosmic [realm], as technological bodies, he was one of the first artists to engage with that. My parents used to look at him like, ‘He’s totally crazy.’ But this craziness had the color of my skin, so I felt entitled to be crazy as well, to free myself.” by @patnabong
How bad is the air in Chicago? Smoke from over 800 Canadian wildfires wafted through Chicago and its surrounding suburbs yesterday. Some people masked up while others spent a hazy morning in Lake Michigan. Here’s how the city grappled with the air yesterday. More photos on the @chicagosuntimes. by @patnabong
Tonia Branche and Deze Scott were two of several people who attended the “People’s Fourth” at the Obama Presidential Center on July 4. Reporter @miss_ethompson asked people to reflect on America’s 250 years. “We’re seeing a lot of things dismantled that a lot of people built up. I think it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come but also a little bit of a wake-up call of how far we still have to go,” Branche said. @chicagosuntimes by @patnabong
Last week, reporter @zachnauth took video producer @zu3 and I on a short canoe trip on the DuPage River, one of the more scenic routes that he recommends in his story, “Kayaks, canoes and paddleboards: 17 great places to explore, see wildlife and find solace on the water in Chicago and the suburbs.” I love being on the water, so this assignment was a treat. We spotted a heron, some ducks, swallows that were too quick to photograph and even a turtle. Check out the list of places to paddle, kayak or canoe on @chicagosuntimes and @wbezchicago. by @patnabong

American robins are in decline. Bob Herguth on the @chicagosuntimes reports: “I think we should really be paying” more “attention to the common species,” according to Williams, who says that what’s known about changes in the robin population should serve as a “massive warning bell.” Besides their obvious aesthetic and importance to ecosystems, robins can be indicators of larger environmental problems affecting not only wildlife, but also humans — with studies in Michigan, for example, using the birds as a gauge for lead levels in the ground. The toxic metal can harm child brain development, and in polluted areas it can permeate the soil where earthworms, a favorite food source for robins, reside. A study published in 2019 in the Wilson Journal of Ornithology observed that “robins could serve as sentinels of environmental change at a continental scale.” Big thanks to @bylaurenfitz for letting me stand on her porch to get photos of these beautiful creatures! by @patnabong
Is pandan the new ube? The past few months, we’ve seen ube — a staple in the Philippines and Asian countries — move closer to becoming mainstream in the U.S. Reporter @miss_ethompson and I were talking about it and I briefly mentioned pandan, the flavor of one of my favorite desserts (hello, Nathaniel’s buko pandan). In true Erica fashion, who is very thorough and curious as a features reporter, she dug into many restaurants in Chicago that offered pandan-flavored desserts. We spent several days over the course of a month or so photographing and interviewing restaurant owners about their pandan offerings, and Erica delved deep into the cultural significance of the flavor and its roots in the chefs’ home countries. Here are some of my favorite images from @haisouschicago @cryingtigerchicago @crumbsndcreams and @pandanchicago. The story is on the @chicagosuntimes by @patnabong
