Getting ready is as much about ritual as it is utility, and the design team at @gunterandco understands that a dressing table mirror plays an important role in grounding us in the art of this sacred ceremony.

Doused in natural light, this bespoke triptych mirror is beautifully proportioned and features two moving arms to ensure that every angle is covered as one sits and carefully prepares for the day or evening ahead. 🪞✨

Like the Monkton Mirror that we shared on Monday, delicate beading is a beautiful frame detail that works with an array of finishes and frame styles. It helps to draw the eye to the inside of the frame and is a great way to bring cohesion to multiple frame designs used within one scheme. 🖼️

Waxed walnut and perfectly-matched fillets work together to make this Tessa Beaver etching, Copper Beech, sing. Giving vintage prints new life with our framing is one of our greatest joys and we absolutely love how this one turned out. 🤎

A gorgeous aged white, antique gold, and gesso frame made using traditional methods for @ahousetolove_. This particular frame was made to replicate a corner sample that Patrick first made many years ago, and it’s always a joy to take one of these classic profiles from the showroom wall to the workbench as we teach a new generation of framers the art of a hand-crafted finish. We love the way the antique gold catches the light here and how the warm wash on the frame so beautifully complements the tones of the painting. Isn’t it lovely? ✨

Country Houses Part 2 - Hampshire, where Alex grew up, is home to some wonderful country houses. Following lockdown, we had the pleasure of working alongside a talented team of architects and builders on the complete refurbishment of a Grade II listed, six-bedroom family home in North Hampshire.

Inspired by our client’s love of the Mediterranean, the brief was to bring colour, warmth, and a sense of playfulness to the interiors, glimpses of which you can see here.

At Otta Design, we believe the most successful interiors are those that truly reflect the people who live in them. We take time to get to know our clients, creating homes that feel individual, considered and deeply personal, whether a large London townhouse or a welcoming family home in the countryside.

A downstairs cloakroom is often the first room a guest walks into, yet it’s usually the last one anyone gives much thought to. This one sits just off the entrance hall, so we wanted the walls to do the welcoming.

We chose Ghost by @atelierellis. It’s a soft, chalky pink with enough warmth to glow when the light comes in through the window, and enough restraint to sit quietly beside Carrara marble and aged brass taps.

We love working with Atelier Ellis. Their paint is breathable and made in small batches. It dries to a beautifully chalky matt finish that makes the colour feel soft and rich rather than shiny.

From panels of hand-gilded white gold mirror glass to crockpots full of gesso, warm and ready for combing, October offered an assortment of wonderful projects for us in our East Sussex workshop. Here are a few snapshots and snippets from some of the stand-out projects completed this past month, though we’ll be shining the spotlight on many of these and sharing more details in coming weeks - so keep an eye out. And if you see something that catches your eye and would like to know more about, please don’t hesitate to get in contact. 🖼️🪞💫

Something a bit different today… 👻

To summon the Halloween spirit, our talented workshop team got out the dremel and transformed one of our bamboo frames into a bamBOO skeleton bone mirror. A bit of frosted mirror spray and a few layers of carefully applied paint wash did the trick (or treat!) to make this mirror truly spooktacular! 🦴

We jump at every opportunity we have to collaborate with master woodcarver @royjamesmartin as the result is always something truly spectacular, like this undulating bronze mirror. This stunning hand-carved mirror is 1.6 metres tall and finished in our imitation bronze, which beautifully catches the light along the curves and ridges that ribbon around the carefully considered frame. It’s a true stand-out piece, one that you can’t help but reach out and touch, and one that will wow for decades to come. ✨

What is a frame fillet?

Some framers might call this a spacer, but here at PI we refer to the thin strip of wood or mount board that’s placed under the rebate of a frame to create space between the artwork and the glass as a fillet. Most commonly used in box-style frames, a fillet isn’t visible when viewing the artwork straight-on but is revealed when viewing it from an angle. Fillets can vary in depth and be finished in a few different ways - they can be made in the same finish as the frame, they can be made in the same material as the mount, or they can be made in a contrasting colour or finish for a fun element of surprise or a pop of colour. We’ve pulled a few of our favourite fillets from projects these last few years to share with you here - which style do you like best?

A thick timber painted mount and a thin walnut fillet was used to frame this large @jeffreyblondes piece.

A thin pink fillet was used as a surprise pop of colour inside this orange Clover Frame.

Linen-wrapped fillets inside this waxed oak frame provide beautiful contrast to this @saradoddceramics Marquette.

Magnolia mount board was used along the inside of this crimson box frame for this charming piece by @printcessmeg. ♥️

Another fun pop of colour - neon green fillets were used in this small walnut box frame for this ceramic piece by @bric_a_brac_eddie.

Simple white fillets form the edge of the “pool” in this sweet multimedia artwork.

We chose extra deep fillets in complementary contrasting colours when framing these Kenyan fans for The Mount Room and we absolutely love the way they turned out.

Kelly Green fillets work to provide contrast between the frame and the white mount for this small floated collage. 💚 by @patrickirelandframes

Today we wanted to shine a spotlight on our radial cornered Nutbourne Mirror. Part of our Sussex Collection, this slimline mirror is made using a sleek 6mm wide tray frame that can be finished in any of our metal, imitation metal, or painted finishes. Like all our mirrors, the Nutbourne Mirror can also be customised to fit your design specifications - whether that’s using antique mirror glass, changing the dimensions, or amending the radius of the corners - making it a great option for anyone looking for a contemporary shaped mirror in a specific size or finish.

This first Nutbourne Mirror is the first of our Sussex Collection to be made in polished stainless steel and boy oh boy is it a stand-out! The finish of this mirror is luxuriously luminous and absolutely glistens in the light, expanding its reflective quality beyond the perfectly polished edges of the low iron mirror glass. Though it’s a relatively simple design, this is a really special piece and we’re looking forward to seeing it in-situ.

This second example of a Nutbourne Mirror was made in a custom square shape, rather than the more common rectangle. The sleek 6mm wide frame is finished in our beautiful imitation bronze, which helps to ground the large expanse of mirror glass and brings depth and warmth to the design.

If you would like to see more examples of how the designers we work with have customised the mirrors in our Sussex Collection, we would love to invite you to take a look at The Sussex Collection in our Patrick Ireland Mirror Gallery on our website. 🪞💫
