Our birthday present — mine on July 14th and Yaya’s on July 31st — was a little family trip back to Brooklyn, a place that will always feel like home.

We got to enjoy some of the food we love and are still so nostalgic about: MeKong, Rocco, Nili, the Dominican hot bar from the corner… and, of course, a visit to one of my favorite iconic places, the Brooklyn Bridge, which has been so meaningful to me since day one.

We were so lucky to stay at our friends’ house, just around the corner from my beloved former workplace, Bittersweet. There’s something so special about walking through streets that hold so many memories of your life, but this time with the little family you’ve built.

We intentionally planned this little family trip around enjoying all the public things that make Brooklyn and NYC so special — parks, splash pads, the MTA (yes, I love it too, more than you think 😂), walking around, eating, exploring, and letting Yaya experience a little bit of the city that was once such a big part of my everyday life.

But over everything that is cool about BK and NYC, what makes this place truly special to me is that so many of the people who have made me feel the warmth of family are still here.

As an immigrant, being far away from my own family has meant finding and creating little pieces of family along the way. And Brooklyn gave me so many people who made me feel loved, supported, welcomed, and at home.

Catching up with them, sharing a meal, laughing together, and now watching them meet and spend time with Yaya is incredibly fulfilling to me.

There’s something very emotional about coming back to a place that shaped you and realizing that, even after all these years, some of the love is still right where you left it.

Brooklyn will always have a very special piece of my heart. And getting to come back with you and Yaya made it even more meaningful.

Thank you, hubby, for such a wonderful birthday gift — for taking us back to a place that means so much to me, and for giving me the chance to share it with the little person we created together.

We love you very, very much! 💕 by @pauecheverri
