If You Squint, It's Mint

We arranged to have the 1776 lead some matching Wheeling units; well, that didn't end up going as planned, as the crew ran low on hours of service and a crossing replacement blocked their run south. At any rate, they used their remaining time to pull and spot stone, making for something that "looks" like a real train. I'm happy with it. by @paul.springowski

A ripped dollar bill signifies more than you might think- just two men from the Great Lakes region; generational wealth. by @paul.springowski

These crisp autumn nights, four SD40-2s up the hill on their knees in notch 8, I live for it. by @paul.springowski

On a beautiful early autumn evening (yesterday) I went after some RTA action; these "Red Line" cars were built by Tokyu in 1985, but designed by Budd, hence that iconic fluting on the sides. These cars are due to be replaced in 2027, we'll see how true that holds. Nevertheless, now is the time to see them!

It's often a challenge to photograph RTA, as there's not many places where the catenary arches don't get in the way. A trail runs along this section of track, known as the "Red Line Greenway" providing ample opportunity in the curves.

The fortunate part is a train every 15 minutes, so if you want to adjust an angle, or you want harder light, there's always another chance. by @paul.springowski

A Day in the City

A 1981 Italian-built Breda RTA car trundles through the crossovers at Shaker Square, deep in one of the oldest inner-ring suburbs of Cleveland. Times are soon to change on the RTA as replacement cars are being delivered.

Fall and rapid transit just feel right together; this is from last year, and I'm inspired to go out again for what might be a last chance. by @paul.springowski

The Big SPC Photo Dump

Here's a collection of photos from my most recent trip to the Soutuern Peru Copper Railroad.

Armed guards are still a presence escorting trains, so I wouldn't advise anyone to go down there and just wing it blindly. This is some serious combat-railfanning, hiding behind rocks and navigating interrogations in a foreign language. by @paul.springowski

We caught up with Paul Springowski to talk about the Wheeling & Lake Erie 1776! 🇺🇸🚂

Hear what Paul had to say about this special locomotive and its role in celebrating America 250!
