1910 Wisconsin Diary Documents a Logging Camp Murder-Suicide

I just acquired this original 1910 diary at a local estate sale. Among its handwritten accounts of everyday life in rural Wisconsin is a remarkable entry dated March 28:

“Wolfgang Kress burned Porters camp today, first shooting Ben Wahl in bed…”

The following entries describe the coroner's investigation and transporting the victims' remains to Phillips, Wisconsin, for burial.

I also located an April 4, 1910, newspaper article confirming the tragedy.

After further investigation, it would appear that the diary was handed down through the family to a direct descendant for over 100 years, whose estate I purchased it from.
