“For whom and to what end?”

That was the question put forth to guests at BLD PNW 2026 by its keynote speaker, Article V Founder @jtflowersx, whose work has helped secure more than $850 million in direct investment for the Albina neighborhood that he grew up in.

His rousing address urged the mission-driven leaders in the room to imagine the world JT’s young son will inherit, and what they might choose to build together.

In this moment, leading with purpose isn’t just good business, it’s a generational responsibility.

This was @onpurposeoregon’s 10th annual BLD conference, and the first under its new name. Their expanded tent is an invitation. Regardless of their certification status, this is a movement for values-led organizations and entrepreneurs who support racial equity, climate justice and a more stakeholder-driven economy.

Hosted by @pdxbschool, the halls were buzzing with the community’s collective wisdom, responsibility and momentum.

“This was the best BLD ever,” said Sarah Holdeman, @onpurposeoregon board chair and co-founder of @theimpactcollectivepdx. “Our programming was absolutely top-notch.”

The day featured workshops and speakers including Claire Randall and Laura Ohm (@grandcentralbakery), Michael Jonas (@narwhallawandbizstrategy), Jessica Elkan (@james_beard_public_market), August Carneiro (@nossafamiliacoffee), Miho Hatanaka (@housenine.wellness) and many more.

‘Together on Purpose’ wasn’t just this year’s theme — it’s a vision for what becomes possible when we come together around our shared values and opportunities.

“It is naive to think that doing business in any other way is what matters,” Sarah said. “Tariffs and gas prices and all these things — it is naive to think that at the core of all of that isn’t business gone wrong.”

And the only way to do things right is to do them together.

There are big choices on the horizon: a mid-term election, artificial intelligence run amok. In the chaos is an opening: to revolutionize the way we work, and why. To treat people better this time.

To lead with purpose.

Buddy Steele spent part of his summer calling nearly 100 vendors to put together the 2027 operating budget for PacWest Tower in downtown Portland, and he got paid to do it.

Buddy is a senior studying Architecture with a minor in Real Estate Property Management. His eight-week internship at Lincoln Property Company also had him touring buildings like the Wells Fargo Tower and The Ritz-Carlton, sitting in on project meetings, and presenting a building performance analysis to the team. He came out of it thinking commercial property management might be his thing, which is a pretty good thing to learn before graduation.

If you want an internship of your own, The School of Business Career Center is a good place to start.

Meet Maya Wells ⚽💚

Soccer player. Business Management & Leadership major. Environmental Sustainability minor. Graduating after winter!

Maya says the program fits naturally with life on a team: “The teachers are super accommodating and the material pairs well with being in a team environment in sports.”

What’s next for her? 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️ A half Ironman, a trip to Australia and New Zealand to see friends, then a career in Portland’s sports business scene, with a sports company or a pro team’s business side.

Her advice to future students: “Do it! It’s a great program at PSU.”

As part of their recent orientation, @pdxbschool MSRE students heard from Brian Gunn of the @portofportland about the transformation of Terminal 2, followed by an on site tour to experience the project firsthand.

Students were able to see how the Port of Portland is transforming a former marine terminal into a campus focused on innovation in Oregon’s mass timber and housing construction industries. It was a great opportunity to see a project that brings together public and private partners with a shared vision for expanding housing creation, growing Oregon’s mass timber industry, and creating more economic opportunity for families across our region.
