People say ZZ plants are “indestructible”... until they aren’t! 🙃🌿
The biggest trap people fall into is treating them like regular houseplants. Because they store water in those potato-like rhizomes underground, loving them a little too much with the watering can is usually what gets them.

Here is how to keep yours thriving:
💦 Watering less is more: Let the soil dry out completely (I mean bone dry all the way to the bottom) before even thinking about watering. When in doubt, wait another week!
💡 Light: They tolerate low light, but they will actually grow faster and stay happier in bright, indirect light.
🚿 Drainage is non-negotiable: Make sure your pot has drainage holes so those rhizomes never sit in standing water.
🪴 Soil: use a chunky soil mix! I love to use 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark, and 1/3 potting soil.

If you want spider plant pups, here’s what to do!

1. Use fertilizer! I have fertilizer that I use every time I water. Comment fertilizer if you’re interested in what I use.

2. Spider plants love being root bound! Don’t repot your spider plant unless you have to water more than 2x a week or you suspect root rot.

3. Let the soil dry out COMPLETELY before watering again!

4. Give it some time. If you have a spider pup, it will take about a year for that pup to produce its own pups. But if it’s already an established plant, you should see pups much faster.

5. Place your plant close to a window or grow light! My plants have thrived in east and south facing windows!

Pretty, but doomed. 🌸👀

While an all-pink leaf looks like a dream, it’s actually a warning sign for your plant. That vibrant pink color means the leaf completely lacks chlorophyll—the pigment responsible for absorbing sunlight and turning it into food.

Without chlorophyll, this leaf can’t photosynthesize. Instead of helping the plant grow, it acts as a total energy parasite, living entirely off the green parts of the plant.

What you should do:
Enjoy the view briefly: It’s gorgeous while it lasts, but don’t expect it to survive long-term.
Prune if necessary: If the leaf starts turning white/brown or the plant produces only pink leaves, trim them back to a node with balanced variegation.
Adjust light: Move your plant to slightly less intense light if it keeps pumping out non-functional pink leaves.

I mean … at this point the plants have taken over. And I’m not sad about it 🤣

I was shocked by which plant is doing better in leca so far! The pothos is absolutely thriving and the alocasia is … struggling. But hopefully with some clean roots and a smaller glass, she can make a comeback! #alocasia #pothos #leca #plants #planttips by @perfectlypropagatedplants

When not to worry:

The soil is mostly dry and you water your begonia and she perks up like in this video!

When to worry:

1. Your begonia is droopy and the soil is still wet. This means your soil is probably too dense and you may have root rot. Probably time to check the roots and repot.

2. Your soil is dry, you water, and your begonia still doesn’t perk up —> make sure your begonia is in a spot with bright, indirect light and check for pests.

3. Leaves and stems are soggy: time to repot, check roots, and potentially propagate to save some of your plant.

I love propagating using water! There’s a few things you need to do for success:

1. Put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in the water. This prevents root rot and helps oxygenate the roots.
2. Make sure JUST the node is in the water, not the leaves. With single leaf propagations, you just want the bottom tip of the leaf in the water.
3. Check your water. If it starts to get filmy, time to replace with new water.
4. With succulents, let your cutting callus for 1-3 days before putting in water.

Happy propagating!

3 genius hacks for nursery pots!

1. If your decorative pot is drowning your nursery pot, cut up an old pot to prop up your nursery pot!
2. Cut off the bottom of your nursery pot, place it over a cup, and use it as a propagation station!
3. Use as a soil scoop or mixer!

Just some controversial thoughts for the day. 💚🌱🌵#plants #plantparent #planttips by @perfectlypropagatedplants

I like to give my plants a week to adjust to my home and then I repot. Here’s why:

1. The soil your plant comes in is usually very dense soil that’s great for a greenhouse, but not your home environment!
2. Removing the soil can remove invisible pests like fungus gnats and mealy bugs.
3. Removing the soil allows you to check for root rot and overall health of the plant so you can make sure you’re setting off on the right foot. You can also pot in a clear pot so it’s easier to keep an eye on your plant health!

It’s always an exciting day when you find corms in the roots of your alocasia! I was repotting and found these two corms, both in different stages.

I like to peel the outer layer of the corm off, I’ve found the most success when doing this. I got a little condiment cup and filled it with fluval stratum, making sure the tip of the corm was facing up. I added a little bit of water and place the cup in a south facing window. Excited to see how they do!
