THE BEAUTIFUL SELL, 2026 — context-deprived found adverts, A3 print-outs The 1970s was a high point for modern design, this is clear even in the adverts. Whenever I’ve got ahold of a magazine from that period I’m often drawn more to the bits trying to sell products that no longer exist. Removing the selling points, the context, you end up with these surreal, funny, often inspirational poster types. I’ve got a lot of these edits, often ripped from Architectural Design mags from the early 70s (they’ve got great covers, too). These are the first I printed out at scale. by @peteontheweb
Logo Design for @gmworkersandtenants. JUNE 2026. Earlier this year I was asked to design a logo for the newly formed Greater Manchester Workers and Tenants Association (GMWTA), a project organising workers, tenants and community members against the far right. I played with a few variants, one being the combination of a ubiquitous factory symbol with the silhouette of a pitched roof home — workers and tenants under one roof. The simplest can sometimes work out the best, though: a bright red badge with sharp factory-like outlines woven into the M and W. GMWTA are holding a launch party on the 29th July. There’ll be music, food and speeches I’m told. You should come down. Let’s build a real alternative to the far right in our region. by @peteontheweb

The Barbican Estate: Symbols or Symbolic? Essay, JANUARY 2023. I completely forgot to share this university-era essay I wrote in defence of modernism when I started uploading bits to this account. Better late than never. I’d most likely write it different now, though I remain a fervent critic of postmodernist architecture. Related is some writing on my beloved brutalism… coming soon. full essay, bibliography an’ all, at peteontheweb.blogspot.com by @peteontheweb
Design & editorial work. Book-binding. For STAT - ISSUE 16/17. JANUARY 2026. Dual cover on this one, wraps around both issues. I’m told my work looks architectural. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I suppose in this instance that makes sense. All I’ve done is superimpose some black squares over an OS map of Burnley. I seem hellbent on putting things on top of each other, obscuring things with blank masses. *** Includes: The Man Who Built an Aeroplane; Lem; Blood, Sweat & Black Pudding; The Life and Times of a Bickershaw Park Ranger; Blow Jobs, Bust-ups & Berghain; Who Were The Economic League?; The Scouse Stone Skimmers of Sefton Park; The Indigent; An Assessment of the Arts Fair; A Stopfordian Sing-Song; The Foul-Mouthed Clickbait of Clitheroe Fucking Market. PLUS reviews of music, film, literature and video games. One of 200 limited, numbered copies. Printed at STAT HQ in Leigh, 2026. *** Editorial The issue you’re currently holding was printed in a five-storey former cotton mill in Leigh, Lancashire. A short walk from the mill, in the Liverpool direction of the Leeds–Liverpool canal, is Pennington Flash. Flashes, unlike their naturally occurring watery relatives, are man-made accidents. They’re created suddenly and unintentionally, the result of flash floods in collapsed coal mines. Pennington Flash is just one of eight across Wigan and Leigh. Lakes that weren’t meant to be; ghosts of Lancashire’s industrial past. Much of my life has been spent on walks around the flash, returning to its winding paths and hordes of geese. I’d trace bridleways that were once trainlines, meander through the adjacent new build estates that were once coal board headquarters. All evidence of the region’s industrial and social fabric has been slowly chipped away, and yet the flash remains. Born not of a reactionary reversion to mythologised pastures, the flash has cemented itself as an immovable feature of the landscape. No testament to extractive practices or fetishised labour, but as something new and distinct, chaotic even. Something new made out of the old, something beautiful made in spite of history, and with thanks to it. We need more flashes. by @peteontheweb
Comms, Social Media & Design for The World Transformed festival. JULY — OCTOBER 2025 @theworldtransformed Back in Spring, my good comrade Mr. Isaac Rose informed me The World Transformed (TWT) festival would be moving to Manchester. After a year’s break, the largest left-wing gathering in Britain would be reborn in a new city, decoupling itself from the Labour Party conference in Liverpool. Given STAT’s regional reputation for provocative leftism and high engagement, particularly amongst the youths, I was asked to work on the social media and comms. teams for the festival. It wasn’t immediately obvious what I’d signed up to. With there being an existing team of (very good) graphic designers — shoutout @pietrogarrone + @maxryanxam — I wouldn’t be creating the visual identity itself, but appropriating key visual elements for a whole host of purposes - from social media posts, emails and leaftlets to web editing. This meant working with the festival’s graphic design team using Figma, and pumping out all sorts of assets at the request of anyone at any time. Besides the immediate work of the socialz, STAT was also to be a part of the cultural programming, staging A Secular Exorcism of the North of England on the Saturday night (as seen in the programme). This was an audio-visual theatre performance and “evening of noise, drone and ritual”. Alongside all of this I manned the comms desk during the festival weekend. This involved the continuation of social media work, and at much greater volumes, but also the checking-in of press contacts, amongst all sorts of other queries. Throughout the weekend I also produced a number of posters for arts events. Very proud that both I and STAT were a part of this new chapter in an important and necessary political gathering. by @peteontheweb
