Shaman Wall 5.14d (9a)

Developing one of the hardest big walls in the world this winter with @leo.boe

A process over the span of two months, 12hr days with some nights on the wall. Bolting 7 additional pitches to an already mighty link up. Creating what should stand as one of the hardest multis in the world.

400m+ 14pitch 5.14d(9a)

Good times 👍

Thanks to all El Salto creatures for the support throughout the process. A special thanks to Dante.

Rätikon

Inspired by those bold enough to fly to close to the sun.

Venturing into the unknown

Bolting ground up is a strange mix of having vision for whats ahead, designing from down below and just straight up luck. Are those features ahead usable, is the sequence I'm envisioning based on the features possible, will we find our passage though.

Bolting in a heatwave

With tempatures across the continent reaching unprecedented levels, the high altitude (2600-2900m) of the Swiss Austrian alps does not fully offer solice, especially south facing walls...

Style

While I feel top down developing allows for a more beautiful well thought out and considered route. To be the designer, with a full overview of all possible combinations and bolt accordingly with intention. The ethics and traditions of certain places dictate the ground up approach. And out of respect for those who came before and in the spirit of adventure, the ground up approach was the style we opted for. It's not only about what the rock has to offer but about having the vision to see it.

*Another track is also is development, a more ambitious and adventurous line which has been left for another season, one which requires far more mettle and resolve. Enchanted, its call and allure will draw me back, that I am certain.

Short re-edit of a 10minute documentary I made in 2017.

This film charts a day in the life of a dairy farmer and his 99 year old mother that he lives with and cares for. Shot over the span of two months in the Spring of 2017.

Before finding myself in the climbing world, my main interest and point of focus was photography and documentary. My aspirations lay in this world, to follow and chart the stories of extraordinary people living extraordinary lives, often found in what many others consider ordinary or mundane. To look beneath the surface, at the range and layers of individuals as well as relationships, motivating factors, and the interconnecting points which allow an environment to operate, moments of connection.

Herzog's idea of "Poetic ecstatic truth" is something I always returned to as a philosophical concept when engaging with the world and while creating, to find a "deeper strata of truth" in what we experience, in people, in relationships and in our environment.

Inspired by the ethnographic work of Marc Singer's "Dark Days" as well as Alma Har'el's stylized observation documentary "Bombay Beach". Two key films which helped frame my worldview. This coupled with Herzogs filmmaking philosophy and the comparative writings of Joseph Campbell set me on course.

Somewhere along the way I found myself immersed in the climbing world. My new world, my new point of focus. To study the dynamics and interpersonal relationships between climbers, how they engage with their sport, with the model and why. The root of their motivation as well as my own.

It's been a while since I posted or took any photos of other climbers, instead, focusing on and putting my energy into my own climbing and developing my own routes, a different creative process. This photo is from last year in June in Arboli, of a friend. by @petertaylorwilson
