![While many are clocking up meetings and miles at the Frankfurt Book Fair, I’m focusing on the catalogue, which will soon be landing in publishers’ inboxes. This year of forced slowing down has made me think a lot about time management and the way I work. And these days, as the world’s geographical axis seems to be shifting towards Germany, while I’m meeting people online instead, I find myself wondering whether — and to what extent — the trade fair format is still effective for agents and publishers.
The compressed schedules, crammed with meetings and appointments; the heart-stopping preparation; the mechanical, lightning-fast follow-up — are they still compatible with today’s market?
Editors are drowning in submissions, while manuscripts, PDFs and infosheets are travelling at the speed of light, and millions of titles are already in circulation.
The fair, as a place for building relationships and, hopefully, exchanging ideas, is a marathon. So how could we transform it and make it more useful, more “focused”? What kind of services could a fair provide to help prevent creative and commercial energy from being scattered? And how much longer will the FOMO of agents and editors keep a system alive that is extremely expensive and increasingly unsustainable?
