I was lucky enough to catch up with the always-busy Sharon Tejada. You’ve probably seen her rocking her signature purple 💜! She’s a marathoner, ultramarathoner, run coach, supportive member of the running community, staff member at Philly Runner, and a proud member of @queerrun & @womeninultrarunning where she plays vital roles in both organizations.
.
Sharon wears many hats, but the one she’s most passionate about is advocating for EQUALITY, INCLUSION, & FAIRNESS for ALL.

Sitting with a very, very full queer elder emo heart following @queerrun Philly 5K Year Two. 💜🧡

Thank you to this incredible crew of volunteers and supporters for helping make this race happen. It truly takes a village, and you all poured so much care into everything from setup to check-in to course support. The Board™️ can’t express enough how much we owe you for the stellar teamwork!

Thank you to @phillypurplerunner and @biaggiopatc for the countless hours of work, planning, troubleshooting, creativity, and dedication that made this event a hit.

It was an honor to welcome double last year’s runners, walkers, volunteers, and supporters into FDR Park. Looking around this morning, I felt so much gratitude for the community we’ve built together and the people who continue to show up for it.

What moves me most isn’t the number of participants: it’s seeing queer and trans people find friendship, belonging, and joy in this space. Thank you for trusting us with that.

More photos soon. In the meantime, join us for Medal Monday at 7 PM in Rittenhouse Square as we celebrate today’s race and spend time together in community. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ taken in FDR Park by @jaypeeonenine

Sharon Tejada's first race — the San Francisco Marathon — was meant to be her last. A check mark on the bucket list. ✅️

But a special medal for the following year's event drew her back in. She kept running for bling, but she was running alone.

After a cross-country move to Philadelphia, Sharon was introduced to the local running community. That's when everything changed.

Today, Sharon is on the leadership teams for @womeninultrarunning and @queerrun, helps runners train for races in the Team Philly Race Training program at @phillyrun, and recently became a certified running coach through the Game Changer program.

Read the Q&A on Running Lifestyle to learn from Sharon about:

🏳️‍🌈 Why no one gets left behind at Queer Run (party pacers!)
🏃🏻‍♀️ Why she became a run coach

🚀 #13PointU – @phillypurplerunner 🚀

“I never saw people who looked like me in this sport. But now I’m here.”

For Sharon, running didn’t start with love—it started with a challenge. She trained alone for her first marathon with a free plan she found online and crossed the finish line in San Francisco with pride, but not much joy.

“That wasn’t fun,” she remembers. “But then they sent me an email about a special medal, and I was like… sign me up.”

One race became four, each motivated more by the bling than the experience. But after moving to Philly in 2021 and running her sixth marathon, something shifted.

“The vibe at the Philly Marathon just felt different. It felt like community.”

That spark led her to @TeamPhillyRuns, where training support and pace group mentorship turned running from a task into something she genuinely wanted to be part of.

“Everyone in the Philly running scene cross-pollinates. That’s how I got pulled in. And I’d say it wasn’t until then that I actually started to love running.”

Now, running is no longer just about finish lines—it’s about connection, expression, and showing up fully.

“The point of running for me is to connect with people and build movements through movement.”

From co-leading @QueerRun to showing up with groups like @WomenInUltraRunning, @SwaggaHouse_Run_Club, and @RJP.Philly, Sharon uses running as both a mirror and a megaphone—for joy, justice, and visibility.

“Running has changed how I view myself and what my body can do.”

Her advice for new runners?

“Give yourself grace. Not every run will feel amazing. Not every space will feel right. That’s okay. Find your pace, your people, and your rhythm—however that looks for you.”

💙 We hope you see U reflected in Sharon’s story—because we see U! #13PointU

Thank you Sharon & Bridget for getting me to commit to doing the Rocky 50K Bad Ass Run on this cold windy day!! Last year, I joined for the last 6mi. This year, with a verbal to these ladies (and thanks to Sharon for mapping and getting me to the start), I ran with everyone from the start, making it through half of the 50K route; getting to experience a different part of the city (Kensington) and the donut stop at Stocks Bakery that everyone talks/raves about when this run is mentioned!! by @jaypeeonenine

marathon #🔟 & my first world marathon major in the books ⭐️

@chimarathon was a weekend full of ✨JOY✨ and community. still feeling the feels from 52k+ runners and their people gathering to celebrate our bodies doing amazing, strong things 💪

i am proud to have run for @projectpurple and to have raised over $2k towards a world without pancreatic cancer 💜

endurance running truly is a team sport and and i am so grateful for my team - i truly could not have done this without @spudbee being the absolute best life partner; @queerrun for being my constant cheerleaders (esp @joshadelphia); and the philly running community for helping me realize 2.5 years ago that running is so much more than just the miles (special s/o to my main peeps this cycle: @queerrun @teamphillyruns @wynnnefieldtrackclub @phillyrun) 💜💜💜 taken in Chicago, Illinois by @jaypeeonenine
