Sometimes stripping back the colour helps you notice the details, coral textures, fish movement, the shapes and patterns that make this place so alive.
This series is a little different to how we usually see the reef, but it’s a reminder that even in simplicity, there’s still a lot going on.

Four days.

Four days until the first people arrive for a trip that, until very recently, existed mostly in conversations between the two of us.

We started Paikea because we wanted to share encounters like this; a mum and calf moving through the waters of Tonga.

But somewhere along the way, it became about much more than seeing a whale.

It’s the place. The people. The days on the water. The things you learn. The moments you weren’t expecting.

Our first Paikea expedition starts in four days.

That feels slightly surreal to write.

So… we started an expedition company.

Paikea began with a pretty simple idea: we wanted to share the places and experiences we couldn’t stop talking about.

At first, it was mostly about whales.

But the more we thought about the trips we wanted to create, the more we realised the wildlife is only part of the story.

It’s the people who know these places. The communities that welcome you in. The early mornings, long boat days, conversations, weather, waiting, learning and everything that makes an encounter possible.

We want Paikea to be about travelling with curiosity, spending enough time somewhere to actually understand it, and hopefully leaving with a reason to care about it long after you’ve gone home.

Our first expedition starts here in Tonga.

And somehow, after a lot of late-night planning, spreadsheets, questionable decisions and saying “we should actually do this”…

we actually did.

More than the sighting. by @phish.by.hannah

The last of the crocs.

Less about the animal this time, more about the light.

Orange scales, green water and reflections breaking everything apart until the crocodile almost disappears into the frame.

Probably some of my favourite images from the Kimberley, because you have to look twice.

I thought the Kimberley would be red.

Red rock, red dirt, red cliffs.

I wasn’t expecting the greens, the deep blues, the dusty pinks, the golds, or the way the whole landscape seems to change colour with the light.

For a place so often defined by its red earth, the Kimberley is unbelievably colourful.

You just have to look a little closer. by @phish.by.hannah

A couple of saltwater crocodiles, photographed across the Kimberley.

Built for patience as much as power, these animals can spend long periods almost completely still, watching, waiting and conserving energy.

In a landscape shaped by tides, heat and dramatic seasonal change, crocodiles look completely at home.

Oh no.

It’s happened.

I’ve started identifying birds for fun.

I know their names. I notice their calls. I point them out to people without being asked.

One minute you’re photographing whales and crocs, the next you’re getting genuinely excited about a nice booby.

I fear that this is something I can’t undo.

A few favourites from my Kimberley birder era.

Beautiful in a way that’s easy to overlook.

Saltwater crocodiles are so often photographed for their teeth, their size and their reputation, but look a little closer and they’re incredibly beautiful animals. The golds, greens and earthy tones through their scales, each one blending almost perfectly into the Kimberley landscapes.

Photography plays a role in how we see wildlife. If we only show certain animals as aggressive, frightening or dangerous, we can reinforce stigmas that ultimately make them harder to understand, appreciate and protect.

That doesn’t mean ignoring what they are. Crocodiles are powerful apex predators and deserve a huge amount of space and respect.

But respect and fear aren’t the same thing.

Sometimes changing the story starts with showing a different side of the animal. by @phish.by.hannah

The Kimberley coastline is one of those places that never really looks the same twice.

Huge tides, ancient sandstone, quiet beaches and colours that seem to change every hour. It’s wild, remote and pretty hard to put into words.

A few frames from the last couple of weeks exploring this incredible part of Australia.

Might have found my new favourite animal to photograph! The green colour pallet wasn’t what I was expected for the north west, but definitely not mad about it!
