What a night! Last Friday, PCNW’s community showed up. Nearly 200 guests gathered at @block41_seattle for Filter, our 2026 Benefit & Auction. The evening brought joy, laughter, connection, bold attire, and incredible photography. Through the silent and live auction, 41 unique artworks found new homes, advancing our mission to champion artists. Speeches were made, laughter was shared, and we celebrated the upcoming 200th anniversary of the birth of photography. Fun fact: Did you know PCNW has been around for more than 30 of those 200 years? That’s 15% of the entire existence of photography! Collectively, we raised record-breaking numbers in support of our home for photography, helping ensure we can continue serving generations of students and artists to come. A special thank-you to the artists who made the auction possible, as well as our staff, board, faculty, sponsors, volunteers, benefit committee, advisory council, and YOU. As Terry said on Friday, it takes a village. 🤍 If you missed the event but would still like to support PCNW, it’s not too late to make a donation through the link in our bio. We hope to see you around the Center at our many upcoming events this fall, including the artist reception for "CURRENTS", our exhibition in collaboration with Shutter & Light Collective. We can’t wait to celebrate these artists next! Thank you for showing up and believing in our work. . . . #seattlephotography #photographiccenternw #seattlephotographers #supportthearts #artsfundraiser by @photocenternw

What does a landscape photograph say beyond what we see? This fall, photographer Daniel Gregory joins us for a special Landscape Photography Masterclass, exploring how landscape can become more than a subject. Through composition, place, memory, identity, and experience, you’ll look at how photographers can use the landscape as a visual language to communicate ideas and develop a more intentional voice in their work. Landscape Photography Masterclass Schedule: - Friday, November 6 | 12–5 PM | PCNW -Saturday, November 7 | 8–11 AM | 8-11am at Kubota Garden, break for lunch, 2-6pm at Location TBA (within 90-minutes of Seattle) - Sunday, November 8 | 12–5 PM | PCNW Before the masterclass begins, join Daniel for a FREE public lecture: The landscape speaks: photography, place and identity 📅 Thursday, November 5 | 6 PM 🎟️ Free with RSVP In this lecture, Daniel will explore how our relationships with landscape, memory, identity, and belonging shape the way we photograph and understand place. He’ll look at historical and contemporary landscape photography and ask how our experiences and cultural histories influence the images we make. The accompanying masterclass takes these ideas into practice through lecture, group critique, and guided shooting sessions. You’ll explore how choices like point of view, framing, depth of field, and location can become part of your own visual language, while also considering how editing, sequencing, titles, and words continue to shape the meaning of your work. Whether you’re drawn to intimate details or sweeping landscapes, familiar places or the remote, this masterclass will help you ask deeper questions of your work: What does this place mean to you? What are you trying to say, and is your image actually saying it? Learn more about the Landscape Photography Masterclass and RSVP for the free lecture through the link in our bio. The wait is over! PCNW’s Filter Silent Auction is officially LIVE!🎉 Our annual auction features a curated collection of photographs from an incredible group of artists, including artist and educator Brian Allen @bkaphoto2025. In this week’s artist spotlight, Brian shares the story behind his photograph “Bradley Field, Bicentennial Celebration,” taken in 1976 during the American Bicentennial celebrations on the East Coast. The photograph captures a moment during the celebration, with a story behind the hidden figure in the truck. Brian’s photograph, along with many other unique works, is now available to bid on through the Filter Silent Auction. Explore the collection, find a favorite (or a few!), and start bidding today! All funds raised support resources for artists, our scholarship fund, and PCNW’s free exhibitions and public programs. 🔗 View the auction through the link in our bio. This week we highlight local artist and owner of Gallery Frames, Daniel Arturo Carrillo-Lozano @daclotype. Daniel shares interesting details of his creative process, as well as insights into making and displaying daguerreotypes. Who knew how important the case is to properly seeing the highly-reflective image! A daguerreotype is the first publicly available form of photography, which featured a unique, highly detailed image captured on a polished silver-coated copper plate. It uses no negatives, meaning that each plate is a single, irreplaceable object. Daniel used this method to create his piece, which is a self-portrait, as he smushed his face against aluminum foil to create an imprint, which is then reflected back by the daguerreotype's shiny surface. As he mentioned, he also fabricated the box, hinges, and engraved a photon on the front, and his initials on the back. This year’s auction features a broad spectrum of photographic processes—from collage and silver gelatin prints to daguerreotypes and digital c-prints—we’ve got something for every photography lover. Check out the full line-up of artists on the Greater Giving site (link in bio), where you can favorite those you want to bid on when the silent auction opens on October 9th. The last day to purchase tickets is October 8th—don’t miss out on the party of the year, get your tickets today! , , , #supportpcnw #pcnwbenefit #photographyauction #artauction #collectart by @photocenternw
PCNW is incredibly excited to welcome Shannon Benine @shannonbenine (she/they) as our new Education & Programs Director. Returning home to Seattle after over two decades away, she brings extensive higher education experience to PCNW. They most recently served as Professor and Chair of Media Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Shannon earned an MFA in Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a BFA in Photography from the University of Washington in Seattle. Shannon is an artist, curator, and educator whose interdisciplinary practice investigates how power and history impact communal agency. Working within an expanded documentary framework, she utilizes photography, moving images, sound, installation art, and archival research to examine the aesthetics and ethics of historical representation. Informed by queer and feminist critical theory, their projects function as active interventions in the historical record, challenging the origins of the archive, the narratives it sustains, and the communities it strategically excludes. She joins the team on October 20th, and we look forward to the year of growth ahead. by @photocenternw
Does a landscape speak, and how do we listen? In this lecture, Daniel Gregory will dive into how our relationships with landscape, memory, identity, and belonging are reflected in the language of landscape photography. Instead of approaching the landscape simply as a subject, he’ll examine both historical and contemporary photographic work where the landscape evolves into a robust and challenging language. A language deeply rooted in history, memory, story, spirituality, and connections to each other. We never encounter a landscape photographically for the first time. We arrive carrying other landscapes with us. Our ways of seeing and being are shaped by these experiences, creating a personal and cultural grammar and vocabulary through which we read, connect and identify place and ultimately self. Landscape images reveal not only where we are, but who we were, who we are, and where we feel we most belong. This lecture will explore what it means to establish a richer connection to the land we all share and how we are shifted and altered by the voice in the land, whispers in the wind, the booming silences, and the emotional traces it leaves with us.
