These are two different exposures of the same scene, but together they make up a single photograph. Both exposures work, and so does everything in between. The video blends the two images back and forth, creating an endless range of possible versions of the same image. There’s no single right way to present the image. The viewer gets to decide which point in the transition works best for them. by @piecloud.ca

Sometimes you can’t decide which exposure works best, because you like both. This set plays with that idea: two different exposures blended into one video, with all the possible variations in between. The viewer gets to decide which version works best. by @piecloud.ca

Here is another douchebag who went to Asia to take pictures with a Sony camera. I'll be posting more evidence of this decision in the coming days. by @piecloud.ca

What happens to places that aren’t remarkable enough to be preserved, but have nevertheless accumulated meaning through years of use?

For the past six months I have been photographing the building that housed Silver Harbour Centre, a seniors’ activity centre in North Vancouver. The project began as an attempt to preserve the memory of a space that was about to disappear. Like the neighbouring Harry Jerome Community Centre, Silver Harbour is moving from its old building into a new one.

The building is in a situation that is common in Greater Vancouver: it is not old enough to be considered heritage, nor architecturally remarkable enough to attract much attention. It is structurally sound, well maintained, and still perfectly capable of serving another purpose. It can feel a bit strange to see an ordinary place disappear, as it has become meaningful through the lives lived inside it.

Over the course of the project, I was fortunate to photograph the building at various stages: while it was still filled with the products of people’s creativity and work, during the move, and finally as it became empty.

This is a small preview. At the end of the project, a large portion of these photographs will be donated to the Archives of North Vancouver, where they can be preserved as a record of the building and the life it once contained. by @piecloud.ca

Artist’s Statement:

Living in Vancouver, I became increasingly aware of how difficult it was to find traces of age and continuity.

Much of the city appeared newly built, and many of the people I met seemed to be forming their own relationship with it, much as I was. The result was a place that often felt more like an idea than a lived environment.

Older buildings and overlooked spaces appeared vulnerable, caught between neglect and redevelopment, their presence quieter than the promise of growth and renewal.

Rather than documenting change or arguing for preservation, l am interested in observing what already exists. I aim to create images in which ordinary spaces move between the abstract and the recognizable.

Curator’s Statement by Mike Goyert @trafaelio
Peter’s photographs live in the ephemeral moment; space is quietly transformed and momentarily imbued with new meaning by virtue of passing light and stirring shadow.
His ability to reveal the ineffable qualities of the overlooked, the forgotten and the passed by serves as a reminder that when we slow down and observe the ever changing world around us, we’re greeted with something more than meets the eye.
