Many coaches struggle to see the value in developing their expertise, how this will impact how effective they are at getting results and building their business. If that’s you, I don’t blame you as it’s not always obvious! Let me try and help you connect the dots with a simple breakdown. Rationale - “The underlying reasoning or justification behind a decision, action or belief.” Rationale / Reasoning = Clarity. More clarity / certainty = less doubt. Less doubt = more confidence. More confidence = trust / buy in. More buy in = more engagement. More engagement = more consistency. Consistency = results. If you don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing, this ultimately hinders the effectiveness of your service. Regardless of whether clients are interested in the nuance or not, they can sense when you’re not sure and/or winging it. If you don’t know something, just be honest about it! Now that’s highlighted an area of expertise you need to develop. @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
Throw back to July when @lewisbowman.pt and I went along to a weekend seminar with @koachkar to learn alongside a great bunch of coaches. As you’ll know by now, the CPD at Pioneer never stops and we’re always keen for getting out of our bubble and learn from others in the industry. Josh shares a similar mindset and has clearly learnt from a lot of different sources over the years. This was evident by his approach of developing a thought process, not necessarily a system. Systems sell, but they can often be rigid. Thought processes aren’t as sexy, but remain dynamic and adaptable depending on the demands of the individual or circumstance in front of you. You are not limited to one way of working. It’s a principles first, methods second way of thinking. I also appreciated how Josh consistently highlighted the importance of applying and reflecting on the knowledge you’ve acquired. Simply ticking a box and attending a course, but not actually doing anything with the information isn’t actual education. Yes, you may be able to keep something in the back of your mind and draw upon it when you need it. But having done a lot of CPD, it’s often a case of use it or lose it! Absorb it, process it, critique it, take what you find useful, discard what you don’t. Learn, practice, reflect, repeat. Plenty of practical take aways from this one! @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
What physical quality are you trying to train? Strength? Force Production? Force Absorption? Hypertrophy? Power? Rate of force Development (RFD)? Reactive Strength? Speed? Acceleration? Deceleration? Max Speed? Speed Endurance? Change of Direction Speed (CODS)? Agility? Flexibility? Active? Passive? Static? Dynamic? Endurance? Aerobic? Anaerobic? Oxidative? Glycolytic? PCr? Repeat Sprint Ability? What tool (exercise) are you selecting to work on that physical quality? Why? How does this apply to the hamstrings or any other muscle group for that matter? Take your thought process beyond picking random exercises because they’re hard. What is the goal? Who is it for? Got a question for me? Drop a comment below or DM me! @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
Imposter syndrome is often painted in a negative light and sometimes rightly so! It can be debilitating if you let it get a hold of you for too long. However, in small doses it can be a blessing in disguise! It’s a sign you’re pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone and that you really care about doing a good job. Being conscientious and diligent is a super power that some people will never grasp. So to have that as an innate trait is very valuable. There are plenty of overconfident egos that win big, fast, but struggle long term. If you’re someone who’s just starting out, looking out into the industry can be daunting. Some people seem to know so much and are really competent at what they do. But just know that regardless of how they present themselves, they still feel imposter syndrome! It never goes away, you just get better at dealing with it! Everyone was once in your position! “The capacity to learn is a gift, the ability to learn is a skill, the willingness to learn is a choice.” Keep going and take your time! Take consistent imperfect action to slowly build yourself up. No matter how good you get. Stay humble. Stay grounded. @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
I am fortunate enough to work alongside people who challenge and inspire me every day. Unfortunately, this sort of situation is pretty rare! Working online or in a gym where not everyone shares your passion to continuously improve can be quite isolating. Within pockets of the industry, there is a lot of gate keeping and unhealthy competition. The outlook and behaviours of those around you can easily rub off onto you. Energy is contagious. Persistent pessimism and fixed mindsets can drain the life out of you. Realistic optimism and growth mindsets are invigorating. Choose who’s within your circle of influence wisely. If a positive and uplifting environment isn’t immediately accessible to you, please seek out or create one for yourself! Continuous professional development has been at the centre of what we do at Pioneer since day one. Regardless of whether you’ve been in this industry for 10 weeks or 10 years, everyone is still learning. One of the main reasons we started Pioneer Performance Education, was to take this ethos outside of our gym and open it up to other coaches. I don’t have all the answers… But if I can be of any help, please reach out! @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation

This is a toxic form of fear mongering within the health, nutrition and fitness space that does way more harm than good. Deliberate use of exaggerated risks, false claims and sensationalised threats to mislead and scare people. Often using shock value to grab people’s attention and slowly convince them that theres an enemy. With constant repetition, vague evidence and a lack of context, this creates a compelling argument for the uninformed consumer to start believing they’re onto something and buy into the BS. Aka creating a problem, then selling the solution. This is not responsible evidence-based practice! 🫵 We need more people like you to up skill and become the coach who actually understands the evidence. In other words, it requires a lot more energy to debunk bullshit than it does for someone to come up with it in the first place. We are on the back foot, having to spend a lot of our time breaking down why what a client has heard on social media is misinformation. Influencer = “Apples will kill you because they’ve been sprayed with pesticides” - Time: 5 seconds. Coach = Spends hours researching the intricacies of pesticide use and all surrounding contextual information to ensure they have a well rounded counter argument to refute the original claim. Takes time to think about how to break a complex topic down into some simple digestible points to best communicate to a client - Time: 4 Hours. It’s time for great coaches to turn the tide and effectively communicate the truth to combat what’s trending. Our next workshop will help significantly reduce the amount of time and effort it takes you to call out BS! As coaches, we don’t have the time to sift through hundreds if not thousands of studies to keep on top of the latest research. We’re not academics! However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t value in understanding how research works. If we do want to listen to an authority on a particular topic who is heavily involved in the research… How do we know who is a well rounded and credible source of information? How do we know if they’re twisting the truth to fit their narrative? Who can we trust? It’s certainly not the viral influencer citing an abstract from a single study that they often haven’t even read (let alone understand) to support their outlandish claim! “Science literacy is a vaccine against the charlatans of the world that would exploit your ignorance.” It’s a case of the supposedly informed, misinforming people 🤷‍♂️. @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
Nutrition is often a contentious topic. Opinionated, dogmatic and loud public figures popping up on everyones feed. Conflicting information causing confusion left, right and centre. Without proper guidance, your prospective clients are being left to fend for themselves in a world full of misinformation. Trying diet after diet, hack after hack with no results to show for it. Not to mention having developed a poor relationship with food. After repeated attempts and countless failures at prioritise their health, this contributes to limiting beliefs. Barriers to behaviour change go up, self-efficacy goes down. Now they feel hopeless. You can be the voice that turns things around and provides a refreshing sense of clarity. At our next workshop, @dr_idz will present on the tools you need to cut through the bullshit and make your voice heard. 🎟️Early Bird Tickets are selling out fast! Which variation are you going to pick? What’s the goal of the exercise? Who is it for? Is it in the program for a real purpose? Do you even need it? Is there a major discrepancy left to right? What equipment do you have available in the gym or your client at home? Have you factored in set up time? What about set up complexity? Does the client feel confident doing it in their own time? How much skill is involved with the execution? What cues and constraints have you provided? How could you make it more comfortable? What degree of abduction/flexion are you going to go for? What about the close-packed position? Could scapular position be a factor to consider? What muscle do you want to play a stabilising role whilst targeting the external rotators? How does position change how gravity is acting? How could you manipulate the resistance profile to increase the difficulty without having to go up in load? What would using a cuff allow you to do? How could you integrate an external rotation challenge into other movements? How much range of motion does the client have solely at the glenohumeral joint? Is it possible to add extra support? At what intensity are you expecting the client to work at? How close to failure are you going to go? What can the client tolerate and recover from? @pioneerperformanceeducation by @pioneerperformanceeducation
