Something that’s been bothering both Juliet and me lately is a trend we’re seeing in the wellness space where people are turning disease into a moral judgment. A registered dietitian named Zach Coen was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and has been very transparent about it. What was surprising was watching people respond by saying that he got cancer because he wasn’t eating organic enough, wasn’t paying close enough attention to ingredient quality, and therefore had somehow caused his own diagnosis. Some even went so far as to say that nobody should listen to his nutrition advice because he “gave himself cancer.” That’s a pretty wild conclusion. Part of the reason this hits close to home is that Juliet is a two-time cancer survivor. The first time she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer she was a 19-year-old Division I athlete at Cal. She grew up in a family that was eating organic food before it was trendy, exercising, and doing all the things that supposedly protect your health. The second time she was diagnosed with cancer, she had just won a world championship. Which is why this idea that cancer is always the result of some personal failure feels so misguided. The reality is that cancer is complicated. Genetics matter. Environmental exposures matter. Random mutations matter. Of course there are things we can do to improve our health and reduce risk, but I think we need to be very careful about turning every diagnosis into a morality tale.
