A friend shared something with me recently, he said, “When you have Allah, you are never alone. You are all one.”The moment I heard those words, I realized how much of my younger life had been spent running away from solitude. In my twenties, there was always something to do, somewhere to go, someone to call, a distraction to entertain, a goal to chase, a relationship to think about. Looking back, I can see that I was constantly moving, constantly filling the space, constantly seeking something outside of myself, while the very thing I was searching for was patiently waiting for me in the silence.Today, my relationship with being alone feels completely different. There are evenings when I find myself excited to return home, close the door, make a tea, sit with my journal, pray, reflect, and simply be in the presence of Allah. What once felt empty now feels full. What once felt lonely now feels intimate. What once felt like isolation now feels like a conversation that never ends.The more time I spend in that space, the more I understand that Allah has been speaking to us all along. Through intuition, through dreams, through ideas, through the body, through the heart, through signs hidden in ordinary moments. His guidance is everywhere, yet the noise of the world is so loud that many women have forgotten the sound of their own soul.Perhaps this is why so many women come to me feeling disconnected from themselves, exhausted from searching, overwhelmed by the expectations placed upon them. Beneath all of that, I often find the same longing: a desire to come home to themselves and, through that journey, come home to Allah.And maybe that is the real meaning of all one. The realization that the closer we move toward Allah, the closer we move toward our own essence, until the separation we once felt begins to dissolve and we finally remember that we were never walking alone in the first place. When I was younger, I remember hearing over and over again, “When you get married, you can do whatever you want.”And somehow, without even realizing it, I started associating marriage with freedom.Freedom to make my own decisions. Freedom to express myself. Freedom to explore who I was. Freedom to wear what I wanted, get the piercings I wanted, live life on my own terms, and finally become the woman I imagined myself to be.I got married at 15 carrying that belief.Years later, life revealed something much deeper to me. Freedom is not a destination. It is not a relationship status. It is not something waiting on the other side of a husband, a house, a title, or a life milestone. Freedom is a relationship with yourself.I have met married women who feel completely trapped inside their own lives, and single women who are deeply alive. I have met women who have everything they prayed for yet still feel disconnected from themselves, and women who have very little yet walk through life with a soul that feels expansive and free.The more I work with women, the more I realize that what many are searching for is not marriage itself. They are searching for permission. Permission to be themselves. Permission to take up space. Permission to dream. Permission to discover who they are beyond the roles they carry every day.A beautiful woman once shared a saying with me in Spanish: “The M of Madre and the M of Mujer are not the same.”Before being a wife, before being a mother, before being a daughter, before being anything to anyone else, there is a woman. A soul. A creation of Allah carrying gifts, desires, dreams, curiosity, creativity, and a unique path written just for her.The greatest journey of my life has been returning to that woman.
