Mosquitoes can breed in small amounts of standing water around your property. Taking steps to eliminate potential breeding sites can help reduce mosquito activity and protect your family from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Remember to SPRAY, COVER and DRAIN – and take a few extra steps around your home:
- Keep gutters clean.
- Seal water deposits in outdoor containers.
- Keep grass short.
- Repair windows and door screens.
- Fix water leaks.
- Drain standing water from items around your home like buckets, trash and recycling bins, pet dishes, tires, child pools and pool covers, toys, boat and vehicle covers, etc. at least once a week.

A few simple steps around your home can go a long way toward helping prevent mosquito bites and mosquito-borne illnesses.

Update: The sewer main was repaired at 2:56 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, and is back in service. Polk County crews and contractors have set up pumps on-site to remove the diverted water from the retention pond. Spill recovery efforts will continue into early next week. Service to residents has not been affected.

Polk County Utilities staff and contractors are responding to an ongoing sewage spill near Champions Gate Boulevard in Davenport. The spill began on Sunday morning after a 24-inch sewer main failed.

The same main previously failed in November 2025. Contractors began installing a replacement main in April. It is now undergoing testing and remains on track to be operational before the end of the year.

Crews have successfully diverted flow from the spill to a nearby retention pond.

Traffic has not been impacted by the repairs. Lane closures already in place for ongoing construction projects remain in effect.

An expected completion time for the repairs to the damaged main has not yet been determined. Updates will be provided as progress continues. by @polkcountygovfl
