“Le ciel m’avait flaté d’une vaine espérance”
“Heaven had deceived me with empty hope.”

The duet between the two title characters Céphale et Procris. Captured here during the album recording of this French baroque opera by the composer Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre last month, first performed in Paris in 1694.

A chance to record with Ensemble OrQuesta for their first ever album of a piece that we staged and performed in two separate seasons a few years ago. I hope you agree that this music is gorgeous and please keep an eye out for the release once it is available.

Sung here with the sublime Poppy Shotts, a pleasure to revisit this music together again.

Thank you to the whole team, to Phillip O’meara for producing and to @continuofoundation for supporting this lesser known piece for an album recording.

Thank you for helping me to finally see myself / @jodiethackrayphotography 📸 / you brought your soul and helped me to show mine too / year 34 of the winding path home by @poppyshotts

A love letter to September and October. Bought a flat, went to some lush gigs, a lot of study, work, and red wine. Celebrating my people. Being celebrated too. The people I love so bleedin much… barely any documentation. by @poppyshotts

Saying goodbye to the home that has been my heart. For the past 2 years I poured my life and soul into this place, and all the people I love inside it. Grant street will always be the place. The hundreds of hours spent around that kitchen table dreaming, reflecting, crying, and living. It broke my heart to leave here. New home loading nearby, it’ll take me a wee while. by @poppyshotts

The irrepressible spirit and legacy of #rosinabonsu indeed. Her energy ripples always. She nudged so many people out on the journey of their life. Rest in peace Rosina 🌻 by @poppyshotts

Kitchen tables have been the beating heart of my life. Growing up, I sat attentively at a green farm patterned tablecloth, wanting a place. At tables across the world I’ve shared food with endless people and stories. In dingy student flats, our kitchen table was a daily communion with sisters where we cooked, sang, discovered ourselves, and who we wanted to be.

34. I gather at this first table of my own. It’s where people have a place, and I’m at home.

The heart, and the people, of my life. by @poppyshotts
