I’ve always wanted to see a shipwreck but everywhere I’ve been it’s always been for scuba divers.
So when I found this spot just off the beach (meaning no boat and scuba gear required), I was so pumped!
It was majestic!

I had just moved to America
I remember being excited because I thought everyone had a swimming pool. Owning a swimming pool might as well have been on the Bill of Rights in my mind.
While we didn’t have a pool of our own, our apartment did come with one.
I’m not sure what I was thinking. Living in landlocked Zambia, I never had the need to swim. I suppose I just thought it was as natural as breathing.
I jumped into the deep end and quickly realized it was not as natural as breathing. Terrified and panicked, it was certainly my last moments.
By luck an adult walked by at just the right moment coming to my rescue.
Since then I’ve had a just fear of water. However, with a life jacket I could jump anywhere and swim anywhere.
But two years ago I took swim lessons and I got pretty decent. But swimming in a pool without a life jacket was a lot different than the ocean water.
The waters in Grand Cayman are extra salty and I was extra buoyant. It was the perfect opportunity to move from pool to sea. @caymankindwatersports looked over me as I took my first leap life vest free.
And I did it!

I have very few physical mementos from my time with my Dad 😇 cut too short by pancreatic cancer.
Pop wasn’t a “stuff person.” He didn’t wear a fancy watch ⌚️or carry a leather briefcase 💼 to his job in human resources. He drove a reliable car—no bells and whistles. 🚘 He didn’t get excited about the size or picture quality of a 📺 TV…as long as he knew where the remote was. He often joked that we were on an “austerity plan” and it was time to cut spending. He certainly didn’t spend much 💰 on his 🧢 wardrobe, which consisted mainly of a steady rotation of well-worn Rutgers jerseys.
Yet Pop gave the BEST presents. 🎁 He gave the gift of experiences. ✈️ Pat and I decided to steal a page from Pop’s playbook and surprise Team Murphy with something we couldn’t wrap, something so priceless it wouldn’t fit under the🎄tree—a last-minute family trip to the 🇰🇾 Cayman Islands, a cherished happy place Pop took me as a child. We planned the trip from “Chairy” during the toughest days of my recovery just when I needed something to hope for the most.
Well, the sea glass hunting didn’t disappoint. We felt Pop’s presence as we found 3 pieces of elusive blue—one shaped like a lightning bolt, I kid you not. ⚡️We are fully recharged 🔋with special memories we’ll unwrap again and again and again for a lifetime to come.
