For his role in I Am Sam, Sean Penn prepared by visiting L.A. GOAL, a real support center for neurodivergent and intellectually disabled adults. Spending time there helped him better understand daily routines and behaviors, and many of his character’s small actions were influenced by what he observed. He was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role.  Dakota Fanning, who played Lucy, made history with her performance. She became the youngest actress ever nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Awards, earning recognition at just seven years old and turning the role into her big breakout moment.  In real life, Fanning has said she had a personal connection to the story, as she has a disabled aunt, which gave her an early understanding of the kind of empathy the film explores. Another interesting detail is that her younger sister, Elle Fanning, also appeared in the film, playing the younger version of her character in a few scenes.
