This created a problem for the company because the ketchup inside wasn’t actually theirs, yet the brand’s reputation depended on the quality people tasted. If the cheaper ketchup was worse, customers could blame Heinz, hurting the brand’s image and value. To solve this, Heinz redesigned its bottle label so it aligned correctly only when the bottle was filled with authentic Heinz ketchup at the proper level. If someone refilled the bottle with another brand, the label would look visibly wrong, exposing the refill. It was a simple packaging change that helped protect the company’s brand and reputation.
