Check me out as I’m making at @truroclayworks Getting ready for some holiday shows on the east coast. by @portzpottery
I am a full time potter and ceramic artist that creates functional, wheel-thrown pottery with occasional hand-built additions. The wheel is where I feel most at home. I carve designs, add decoration, and apply color by hand, carving and applying layers of underglazes and glazes to bring depth and dimension to each piece. I primarily work with white stoneware and fire to cone 6 in an electric kiln, though some pieces are atmospherically wood-fired or gas-fired with salt or soda. My work often has a textured, tactile quality achieved through carving or by leaving surfaces unglazed. My designs are influenced by the Pacific Northwest and a queer perspective. I’ve developed several bodies of work over time. One series is more commercial, featuring rainbow motifs and a modern playful design. Another explores queer themes and the nude male form. Bringing my identity as a gay man into my artwork has made it extremely personal. I now make the kind of work I wish I had seen growing up, pieces that are both affirming and accessible to a wide range of audiences. #ceramics #provincetown by @portzpottery
Come take a class with Dennis Portz our new artist in residence from Portland, Oregon! by @portzpottery
@portzpottery is in the house! Dennis Portz drove here all the way from Portland Oregon. He is busy at work on his beautiful pots. Follow his journey as he develops new and exciting pottery here at Truro Clay Works during his year long Artist in Residency. by @portzpottery
Dennis of @portzpottery is a queer ceramic artist whose work celebrates community, identity, humor, and joy — and feels so wonderfully Portland. 💛 While he’s away for his year-long residency in Cape Cod, we’ll be slowly bringing his pieces into the shop throughout the year. In the meantime: enjoy 60 seconds of crinkly paper + ceramic clinks for your ASMR needs. 😂 Please shop local & small. #QueerArtists #PortlandArtists #ShopLocalPDX #portlandoregon by @portzpottery
If you haven’t heard or are new to me @truroclayworks is hosting me as a resident for one year! I will be on cape cod, MA until Sept of next year! Take a look at the studio :) by @portzpottery
Yeah, I made it. It felt like a super long drive today, but it was one of the shorter days. by @portzpottery
A VERY large pottery restock has landed. 😂 My favorite ceramicist - @portzpottery is off to Cape Cod for an amazing year-long residency, but he left me with mugs, bowls, planters, and tons of beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces to slowly bring into the shop. I especially adore his Nakedy Man series and the way his work celebrates gay men and the LGBTQ+ community with so much joy, honesty, and personality. 🏳️‍🌈 These are sturdy, handmade pieces meant to be used and loved for years. Internet magic is big dumb. Anyway, shop local & small. ❤️ 📍1022 W Burnside St @unionwaypdx Thank you Dennis, @portzpottery - Please travel safe and well!
