My first job in the UK lasted just 2 months.

Not because I couldn’t do the job…
But because I was too open.

I had just relocated.
New country. New system. New life.
And I was a first-time mum, still navigating motherhood with an 11-month-old baby as at then

During training, we had group introductions and casual conversations during breaks.
Everyone was sharing their experiences… so I did the same.

I talked about my previous work in Nigeria.
I talked about motherhood.
I talked about adjusting to a completely new life.

It felt normal. Innocent even.

But I didn’t know… I was being watched.

In my first meeting with my manager, everything changed.

Suddenly, I was being asked:
“Are you getting enough sleep?”
“Do you have support at home?”
“Your trainer says you seem distracted…”

It didn’t feel like a conversation anymore.
It felt like an interrogation.

The same things I shared freely…
Were now being used to question my ability to do my job.

I tried to defend myself.
I showed up. I stayed strong. I pushed through.

But it didn’t matter. I was dismissed.

Looking back now, I realise something:
I should have protected my story.

Not everyone asking questions is genuinely concerned.
Some are assessing you… quietly.
I wasn’t weak.
I wasn’t incapable.
I was just new, open, and unaware.
If you’re starting over in a new country, hear this:

Be warm… but be wise.
Be friendly… but be careful.

Not every space deserves your full story.

Have you ever shared something at work and later regretted it?
