School anxiety does not always look like fear.

Sometimes it looks like a sore tummy on Monday morning. Tears over getting dressed. Anger when it is time to leave. Bargaining at the classroom door—or a child who appears to cope all day and then completely falls apart at home.

It can be easy to see this as refusal or difficult behaviour. But often, the behaviour is communicating:

“School feels too hard right now.”

When we understand what is happening beneath the behaviour, we can respond with calm support while still helping our child take small, manageable steps forward.

My new parent toolkit, *When School Feels Too Hard*, provides practical strategies, helpful language and planning tools for families navigating school anxiety and avoidance.

Available now through the link in my bio.

Positive Kids
Practical psychology for everyday parenting by @positivekidsparentresources

So why am I suddenly on Instagram? 😂

Positive Kids isn’t new.
Instagram is.

I’ve spent 20+ years working with kids and families — and somehow some of those “kids” are now 25 and still coming back. 💛

Which makes me feel approximately 107… but also incredibly lucky. 😂

Over the years I’ve learned a LOT.

From teaching.
From psychology.
From parents.
And especially from kids — because kids will tell you pretty quickly when your brilliant idea is actually rubbish. 😂

And I realised something.

I don’t want everything I’ve learned over all these years to disappear with me. I want to pass it on.

The useful stuff.
The funny stuff.
What actually works.
What absolutely doesn’t.
And the things I wish every parent knew.

No judgement.
No perfect parenting.
No textbook waffle.

Just real stuff from years spent with some seriously cool kids and families.

That’s what this little Instagram corner of Positive Kids is about. 💛

And apparently Tommi & Teddi have joined the team.

Neither has any relevant qualifications. 🐾😂 by @positivekidsparentresources

Bought a music player for the kids.
Apparently what we actually bought was a middle-aged dance floor. 😂🕺💃

The kids can have a turn when we’re finished.

Went out for dinner.
Accidentally accepted a supporting role. 😂🔥

And somehow the rice had more life in it than I did by the end. ❤️😂 by @positivekidsparentresources

Back to school tomorrow… and apparently we’ve NEVER done mornings before. 😂

Uniform? Missing.
Shoes? Missing.
Lunch? Still on the bench.
Patience? Hanging by a thread. 😅

Welcome back, parents. We’ve got this. Sort of. 💛

Who else is expecting absolute chaos tomorrow morning? 😂

Back to school tomorrow, Darwin. 🎒☀️

For some kids, it’s exciting.
For others, tonight might bring:

“I can’t sleep.”
“My tummy hurts.”
“I don’t want to go.”
“What if no one plays with me?”
…and suddenly remembering at bedtime that they have absolutely no idea where their school hat is. 😅

Big feelings before going back to school don’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Transitions can just feel BIG.

Tonight, keep things calm.
Tomorrow morning, keep things predictable.
And try not to solve the whole term before breakfast.

A calm goodbye, a confident “You’ve got this”, and an adult who believes they can cope can go a long way. 💛

And if tomorrow isn’t perfect? That’s okay too.

Here’s to Term 4. 🙌

What a week. ⚽️❤️💙

We came all the way from Darwin for Barça Academy — a pretty big commitment for one week of football — and it was worth every single minute.

The coaching was exceptional, but what really stood out was watching the kids grow across the week. The confidence, teamwork, discipline, friendships and, of course, the football.

There’s something pretty special about watching kids work hard, challenge themselves and have the time of their lives.

A week we’ll remember for a very long time.

Darwin to Brisbane for Barça? We’d do it again in a heartbeat. ⚽️❤️💙

Some cricket matches are apparently best of three. 😂🏏
Grandpa was never going to let yesterday’s result stand. by @positivekidsparentresources

😂 Apparently you don’t just visit Brisbane… you start preparing for The Gabba. 🏏

One tiny cricket game and suddenly everyone’s got a professional career ahead of them. 😂

Grandkids + Grandpa. ❤️
Apparently the rest of us are just there for crowd control. 😂

These are the days. ❤️

Some days parenting is less “calm, connected and consistent” and more…

Mum. Mum. Mum. MUM. 🤣
Please tell me it’s not just my house. 😂
Can you find my shoes?
Can I have a snack?
Where’s my lunch?
Can you help me with this?

And somehow they always find you. Even when there’s another perfectly capable adult standing RIGHT THERE. 😂

If you’ve ever hidden in the bathroom just to get five minutes of peace… we see you. ❤️
