🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – SARA 🎨✨

Sara has a wonderfully distinctive artistic style, full of imagination, symbolism and flowing movement. Her expressive use of colour, intricate details and storytelling gives her artwork an almost magical quality.

It was a pleasure to have Sara join our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting workshop.

Her beautiful angel, surrounded by flowing blue ribbons, delicate flowers and decorative lettering, is a wonderful example of how traditional medieval techniques can become something entirely personal and contemporary.

I particularly love how she incorporated the golden background into her composition, creating a piece full of warmth, movement and meaning.

Thank you, Sara, for sharing your creativity with us! ❤️

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – ERIK DE JONG 🎨✨

Meet Erik de Jong, a talented artist whose beautiful work reflects a wonderful sensitivity to landscape, atmosphere and light.

Erik’s artistic achievements include winning first prize in the Landscape category of the 2023 EJ Mantova Art Prize in Bellingen with his oil painting Neverend.

His work was praised by the judges for its subtlety, restraint and beautiful tonal qualities.

It was a pleasure to welcome Erik to our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting workshop, where he explored traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of artists.

One of the most rewarding parts of this workshop was bringing together artists from such different creative backgrounds, each approaching these historical materials with their own experience and artistic vision.

Thank you, Erik, for being part of our very first workshop! ❤️

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – HILARY HERRMANN 🎨✨

Meet Hilary Herrmann, a wonderful contemporary artist from Bangalow in the Byron hinterland.

Hilary’s paintings take us into a world of imagination, storytelling and dreams. Her expressive artworks are filled with curious figures, creatures, colour and symbolism, often inspired by everyday life, memories and mythology.

An established artist with an impressive exhibition history, including Lismore and Tweed Regional Galleries, and her paintings sought after by collectors, Hilary has established a distinctive place in Australia’s contemporary art scene. Hilary’s work has also found a big audience through galleries in Sydney and Melbourne.

It was lovely to welcome Hilary to our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting workshop and see a contemporary artist exploring centuries-old techniques.

I love how artists from completely different backgrounds can come together through a shared curiosity for materials and craftsmanship. 💛

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – DEAN PEARCE 🎨🎬

Meet Dean, the creative talent behind Next Level Picture Framing in Ballina!

With over 35 years in the creative industry, Dean’s career has taken him from fashion design and leatherwork to the world of film and television.

His impressive work includes costumes for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a black and yellow jumpsuit worn by Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy, and a leather jacket for Pink in a V8 Supercars advertisement. 🎬

Today, Dean brings his creativity and attention to detail into his picture framing business.

At our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting workshop, he created a beautiful artwork of a Tasmanian lighthouse that holds a special place in his heart, combining traditional gilding with a very personal subject. ✨

And here’s something special to me: it was Dean who came up with the idea of hosting my very first workshop in his studio!

Thanks to his enthusiasm and encouragement, we made it happen. 🙌

I love people who turn ideas into action!

Thank you, Dean, for your creativity, generosity and support in keeping traditional craftsmanship alive. ❤️

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – SALLY JOYCE 🎨🌿

Meet the lovely Sally Joyce, a warmhearted and passionate artist from Kyogle in Northern NSW.

Sally is a landscape and mural painter whose love for nature shines through her beautiful work. Inspired by our local rainforests, rivers and gardens, she brings colour and life to walls, public spaces and children’s playgrounds.

One of her wonderful projects is Kyogle’s street piano, which she transformed into a colourful artwork inspired by the Border Ranges. 🎹🌸

Sally also works alongside her husband in their gardening business, combining her two passions – art and nature.

What I particularly admire is her dedication to encouraging creativity in children and supporting the next generation of artists.

It’s people like Sally who make our creative community so special! 💚

🌟 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – MARIUS 🌟

Meet Marius, an icon painter originally from Romania, now living on the Gold Coast. ✝️🎨

Marius and I share the same passion - keeping Medieval and Byzantine art alive!

He believes, just as I do, that these centuries-old skills have an incredible value and deserve to be preserved and passed on to future generations.

After all, that’s how these beautiful traditions have survived for centuries - from one generation of artists to the next.

It was wonderful having Marius at my Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting workshop and sharing our love for this extraordinary art. 💛

I have to share my today’s excitement 📙 please check this extraordinary book out, it far surpassed beauty 🫶 and it’s huge in size too. Of course only my absolute favourite bookstore of all of Australia @kinokuniya_sydney carries something special like this - let’s see if Santa 🤶 reads my post 😅#italianpalazzo #bestbookstore #classicalarchitecture by @precious_wall_finishes

I just can’t help myself!!! 🧡

Here comes another round of photos from our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting Workshop @nextlevelpictureframing !

I mean … please have a look at what these wonderful artists have created in just TWO days!!! 🤩🙌

And to think that all these magnificent artworks started out as plain white gesso boards! From there, through water gilding, burnishing, punching and egg tempera painting, each one evolved into something so beautifully individual.

A little gold, pigment dust 🧚‍♀️and a lot of patience lead to absolutely stunning results!

And here I am, still deeply touched, feeling like the proudest teacher in the world! ❤️🥰 Thanks Team

Oh my goodness, where do I even begin! ❤️✨

I can’t express how incredibly excited and proud I am of the magnificent artworks my students created during our Medieval Gold & Tempera Painting Workshop! @nextlevelpictureframing

All of them accomplished artists, yet exploring techniques that are centuries old, with so much curiosity, enthusiasm and joy.

And just look at their results!!! 🤩 I’m absolutely blown away by what they’ve achieved in such a short time!

It’s been such a wonderful weekend, full of creativity, laughter, gold leaf and a little bit of magic. ✨

I’m so, so proud of every single one of you! ❤️🙌 more photos to come #MedievalArt #GoldLeafGilding #EggTempera #WaterGilding #TraditionalCraftsmanship #HistoricalPaintingTechniques #MedievalPainting #RenaissanceArt #ArtWorkshop #GildingWorkshop #GoldLeafArt #FineArt #ArtEducation #TraditionalArtTechniques #HeritageCraftsmanship #KeepingTraditionalCraftsAlive #AustralianArtists #ArtWorkshopsAustralia #BallinaNSW #NorthernRiversNSW #PreciousWallFinishes by @precious_wall_finishes

I was extremely greatful for the opportunity, over the last two days, to learn some master skills in medieaval tempera painting and water guilding from Krissie Mayne of Precious Wall Finishes, hosted in the studio space of Next Level Picture Framers. These two collaborated to host a wonderful artists workshop…On Thursday I was gifted a geranium cutting from a plant that belonged to my late grandmother. By this afternoon that plant was iconised and recognised for its glory and the preciousness of its gift to me… A third generation custodian of the sams living plant…perhaps a work still in progress. Thank you Krissie & Dean for creating the workshop I was looking for. Glorious!!! by @precious_wall_finishes
