As a dad who spent 135 days in the NICU with my son, I know how different life can look when your baby arrives far too early.

The holidays can be especially difficult when you’re celebrating milestones inside a hospital instead of at home.

That’s part of why A NICU Christmas Adventure means so much to me.

Together with neonatologist Dr. Prem Fort, I wanted to help bring a little joy, imagination, and Christmas spirit to families experiencing the NICU.

💜 PREEMIE OF THE DAY: Meet Ryder! 💜

Born at just 31 weeks and 3 days, Ryder spent 107 days in the NICU, fighting battles no baby should ever have to face. ❤️

His family was told he might not survive the night. And even if he did, they were warned he might never have a meaningful quality of life.

But Ryder had other plans! 💪💜

Now 21 months old, Ryder is thriving, working on walking and talking, and reaching so many incredible milestones! One of his family’s favorite memories is celebrating his very first birthday—a moment that once seemed unimaginable.

And as for those predictions about him being a “vegetable”? Well, Ryder is too busy EATING his vegetables! 🥦😂

From uncertain beginnings to a little boy living his best life, Ryder’s journey is a beautiful reminder that every milestone deserves to be celebrated.

💜 For the NICU nurses and medical teams who become part of our families.

I’m exhausted. I’m overwhelmed. I haven’t had a full night’s sleep in what feels like forever.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. I’VE GOT THIS. 🤣💜

After spending weeks or months watching nurses, doctors, and machines care for our babies, finally being the one in control can be hard to give up.

We spend so long feeling helpless that sometimes accepting help feels harder than doing everything ourselves.

But here’s your reminder: You can be fiercely protective of your preemie AND still need a break. 💜

When people hear “premature baby,” they usually picture a tiny, delicate little angel who needs extra cuddles.

NICU parents know there’s a WHOLE other side to these little humans! 🤣

👶 WHAT PEOPLE THINK: “They’re so tiny and fragile!”

💪 REALITY: Tiny? Absolutely. But some of these babies have been giving doctors, nurses, and their parents attitude since day one!

😴 WHAT PEOPLE THINK: “They must sleep all the time!”

🚨 REALITY: They’ll sleep through 47 monitor alarms but wake up the SECOND you finally sit down to eat.

🍼 WHAT PEOPLE THINK: “They’re just smaller versions of full-term babies!”

🏥 REALITY: They’re learning to breathe, eat, grow, and regulate their temperature while their parents earn honorary degrees in NICU terminology.

🥹 WHAT PEOPLE THINK: “Once they come home, everything goes back to normal!”

😂 REALITY: Congratulations! You’ve graduated from the NICU and unlocked a whole new level of parenting: tracking ounces, obsessing over germs, and celebrating every single milestone!

💜 WHAT PEOPLE THINK: “They’re little miracles!”

❤️ REALITY: They’re babies with BIG personalities, incredible stories, and families who know that even the smallest milestones deserve the biggest celebrations.

As a dad who spent 135 days in the NICU, I can confirm one thing: Never underestimate a preemie! 😂💜

💜 1 IN 10. MORE THAN JUST A STATISTIC. 💜

1 in 10 babies worldwide is born prematurely.

That means countless moms and dads are experiencing a journey they never imagined when they first saw those two pink lines.

Instead of bringing their baby home, they’re learning medical terminology, watching monitors, celebrating every ounce gained, and wondering when they’ll finally hear the words, “You can take your baby home.”

I know because I was one of those dads.

Our son arrived at just 25 weeks, weighing only 1 pound. What followed was 135 days in the NICU that changed our lives forever.

But here’s what I want people to understand about that 1 in 10:

💜 Behind every number is a baby with a story.

💜 Behind every incubator are parents trying to stay strong.

💜 Behind every milestone are countless moments of fear, hope, and love.

💜 And behind every NICU journey is a family whose experience deserves to be recognized, whether their story ends in celebration, continued challenges, or heartbreaking loss.

💜🏡 NICU GRADUATE ALERT: JOAKIM JR. IS HOME! 🎉👶

After months of fighting, growing, and reaching milestones, Joakim Jr. finally came HOME yesterday! 💜🎓

Born on June 2 at 3:06 AM, 12 weeks early, Joakim Jr. weighed just 2 pounds, 14 ounces. Instead of heading home with his family, he began his journey in the NICU.

Over the months, he’s worked hard to grow stronger, gain weight, and master feeding. From just 2 pounds, 14 ounces to an amazing 12 pounds, 2 ounces, look how far he’s come! 💪💜

And now, the moment his family has been waiting for is finally here. No more saying goodbye at the NICU doors. He’s HOME! 🏡❤️

💜🌟 PREEMIE OF THE DAY: MEET JACOB! 🌟💜

From a tiny NICU fighter to a future zookeeper! 🦁🐘

Born at 29 weeks and 5 days, weighing just 2 pounds, 5 ounces, Jacob arrived early due to complications from severe preeclampsia. He spent 69 days in the NICU, beginning an incredible journey of growth and determination.

Now 9 years old, Jacob has overcome so much, including seven surgeries! 💪💜

Diagnosed with autism before turning 3, Jacob spent years in an autism classroom. This year, he’s reached an exciting milestone, transitioning to a learning disability classroom and joining general education math with in-class support! 📚🎉

And Jacob has BIG dreams! His goal is to become a ZOOKEEPER! 🦒🐒

Jacob’s story reminds us that our preemies are so much more than their birth statistics or diagnoses. They have their own incredible dreams and futures ahead!

💙 “For real life? You had to leave me at the hospital?” 🥹

If you’ve watched Bluey, you know how the kids react when Bandit tells them stories about growing up in the ’80s. To them, it sounds like an entirely different world.

Now imagine explaining the NICU to your child someday.

👶 “Wait… I was born THAT early?”

💜 “I weighed HOW much?”

🏥 “You mean I lived in the hospital for MONTHS?”

🥺 “You and Mommy had to go home without me?”

Yeah, buddy. Things were different back then.

As a NICU dad, I sometimes wonder what that conversation will look like. How do you explain to your child that their first home wasn’t a nursery, but a hospital room? That their first lullabies were mixed with monitor alarms? That holding them wasn’t always as simple as picking them up?

How do you explain that leaving them every night was one of the hardest things we ever had to do?

And how do you tell that story without making them feel like their beginning was something sad?

Because while the NICU was filled with fear and uncertainty, it was also filled with love, incredible nurses, tiny victories, and moments we’ll never forget.

One day, our children may hear these stories and think we’re exaggerating.

And maybe that’s a beautiful thing. Because the world they know today is so different from the one where their story began. 💜

On May 25, 2018, we became first-time parents. But instead of bringing our son home, we began a journey we never could have imagined.
