A glimpse inside Britt Salt’s studio. Working across textiles, drawing, sculpture and installation, Salt uses thread to draw attention to space, air, elements and gravity — things that can otherwise go unnoticed. For ‘Contemplating Impermanence’, delicate works in thread and metal respond to the architecture of the gallery, exploring its spatial qualities through states of tension and precarity. ‘Contemplating Impermanence’ Opening Friday 6 November, 6–8pm 7 November–12 December 2026 Curated by Kim Donaldson and David Thomas with Jiayang Zhang. by @project8.gallery
Introducing Liu Liling, exhibiting in 'Contemplating Impermanence'. Liu's practice explores duration and the experiential nature of the image through processes of printing and layering, with works that often operate as spaces of transition. This approach can be seen in the making of 'The Passage', 2026, where scans are overprinted, re-photographed and scaled to a narrow sliver, becoming a space where one arrives and through which one leaves. FINAL DAY: ‘INEFFABLE’ A final look at Ineffable, closing at 5pm today at Project8. The exhibition brings together artists working with the hard to describe, the almost impossible to articulate and the unexplainable. With no firm definitions, the indefinable moves through sound, shape, texture and sensation. Featuring The Ghosts of Nothing, Lewis Gittus, Claire Lehmann, Christopher Theofanous, Karina Utomo and Chaohui Xie. Performance today - HEOLSTOR Saturday 17 October, 3pm Join us at 3pm today for a live performance by Karina Utomo @karinautomo and Lewis Gittus @lewiscancut Conceived as a sonorous grotto in which non-visible realms become manifest, Heolstor brings Utomo’s extra-normal vocal practice into dialogue with Gittus’ explorations of synthesis, resonance and corporeal sound. For this iteration, voice, demung and gong, contact microphones and synthesis gather through vibration and accumulation, creating a fleeting material presence. Presented as part of Ineffable, curated by Kim Donaldson with Jiayang Zhang. — Image: Heolstor, performance by Karina Utomo and Lewis Gittus, Project8 Gallery, Melbourne, 24 May 2024.Photography: Lucy Foster @lu_spent by @project8.gallery
The Ghosts of Nothing, ‘Undertow’ (from ‘Sounds of Unridden Waves’), 2026. Its surface feels submerged: colour builds, recedes and clouds over itself, holding the eye without ever quite resolving into a fixed image. That instability is central to The Ghosts of Nothing’s wider ‘Sounds of…’ project, where abstraction and saturation are pushed against one another to create dense, ambiguous fields of meaning. ‘Ineffable’ continues Wednesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm, until 24 October. - Image: The Ghosts of Nothing, ‘Undertow’ (from ‘Sounds of Unridden Waves’), 2026. This Saturday at Project8 — 𝕳𝖊𝖔𝖑𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗 — a performance by Karina Utomo and Lewis Gittus. Time: Saturday October 17, 3pm. Location: Project8 Gallery, Level 2, 417 Collin’s St. Melbourne. @karinautomo @lewiscancut @project8.gallery ‘Heolstor’ is an ongoing collaborative performance project, taking its name from an archaic term for darkness, concealment or a hidden recess. Conceived as a sonorous grotto in which non-visible realms become manifest, the work brings Utomo’s extra-normal vocal practice into dialogue with Gittus’ explorations of synthesis, resonance and corporeal sound. This new iteration expands the work through demung and gong, bringing the resonant properties of bronze into an evolving interplay of voice, contact microphones and synthesis. Through vibration, resonance and accumulation, ‘Heolstor’ creates a space in which sound is encountered as a fleeting material presence.’ Presented as part of ‘Ineffable’, curated by Kim Donaldson with Jiayang Zhang.

Karina Utomo in ‘Ineffable’. @karinautomo In Kuala Jagad (Confluence of Realms) (2025), Utomo brings together the sonic frequencies of a worker bee’s wingbeat, the human voice and the gong. Drawing on Javanese cosmology, the work considers the intersection of sound and matter, exploring the resonant properties of bronze, an ‘elastic’ alloy of copper and tin, elements of stellar origin, within an amalgam of material and immaterial realms. Suspended from hand-formed serpentine chains, the gong is activated by voice. An audio exciter transmits a vocal composition directly through the bronze, transforming the gong into a resonant body. The interlinking forms reference festooning, a collective behaviour in which worker bees suspend themselves in living chains, a phenomenon whose precise purpose remains elusive despite extensive scientific inquiry. PERFORMANCE: ‘HEOLSTOR’ — KARINA UTOMO + LEWIS GITTUS Saturday 17 October, 3pm Presented as part of ‘Ineffable’, ‘Heolstor’ brings Utomo’s extra-normal vocal practice into dialogue with Gittus’ explorations of synthesis, resonance and corporeal sound. ‘Ineffable’ continues until 24 October. — Images: Karina Utomo, ‘Kuala Jagad (Confluence of Realms)’, 2025. Single-channel audio, cast bronze chain, high-tin bronze gong, gongsmiths: Redy, Sarwanto, Gunadi, Tukiman, Sehat, Purnomo, Sukirdi, Srimanto. 120 x 60 x 20 cm.
