This Saturday and Sunday, some of the people from Project K-Shift are creating a temporary community parklet on Darley Street, outside Valet café and beside the Botany View Hotel.

The activity is being held to mark international PARK(ing) Day, when communities around the world temporarily transform road space into small public places. The aim is to demonstrate how a modest reallocation of road space could improve pedestrian accessibility and safety, support local businesses, strengthen community connections and add to the street life of this part of Newtown.

The parklet will use hay bales, plants, tables, seating and umbrellas to create a welcoming place where people can stop, meet their neighbours and support nearby businesses. Bollards and other practical measures will be used to clearly define the space.

Drop by on Saturday or Sunday and check it out, say hello, have a coffee. We appreciate your support. 💚 by @projectkshift

🗑️BIN THE CLEARWAYS🗑️

Everyone is getting involved with our sticker campaign!

Why do we want to get rid of the clearways?

Clearways are designed to move cars through the area, not to support the people who live, work, and shop here. They treat King Street and Enmore Road as commuter corridors, not as destinations.

Clearways:
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Discourage community activity
🛍️ Undermine footpath trade
⚠ Reduce pedestrian safety

When clearways are enforced, curb space is cleared of parked cars, but nothing is given back.

That space could be transformed into:
🌳 Parklets
🚲 Protected bike lanes
☕ Footpath dining
🧒 Green spaces
🚌 Bus Bulbs

Right now, it sits empty for a few hours a day, just to funnel traffic slightly faster.

Local businesses rely on:
🅿️ Short-term parking
🏃‍♀️ Walk-up foot traffic
⏸️ A comfortable street environment

Clearways take away parking at peak hours, reduce dwell time, and make the street noisier and more stressful, a net negative for cafes, shops, and services.

Clearways enable faster, less predictable traffic patterns. In contrast, reclaiming that space allows for:
🚶‍♀️ Safer pedestrian crossings
🧱 Traffic calming
🌿 Street greening
💡 Public art and local character

Since the completion of Westconnex and other bypasses, the case for clearways on these main streets has eroded. We now have better regional corridors for cars. It’s time to focus these inner streets on what they should be doing: serving people, not cars. by @projectkshift

Vale Newtown Forest. It was a short time, but a good time #newtownforest #newtownsydney by @projectkshift

On 21 July, the Newtown Community Forest was removed. Transport for NSW said it was unsafe.

@heleana_genaus from @newtownenmore.sydney and @rising_sun_workshop was there.

As Heleana said, two trucks, police cars, personnel. All taxpayer funded. To remove plants put there by locals who wanted a greener Newtown.

“I don’t even think a complaint was made.”

We’re holding a wake tomorrow at The Townie from 7pm. Come and mourn the forest with us and help us figure out what’s next. 🌿
