It takes radical optimism to stay engaged with news right now.

That’s what I told the room at @after5society this week. It’s not looking good when it comes to media and our state of trust in what we believe in.

But good information is how we keep a democracy. And the 40 some people that showed up in Chicago heat to talk about the state of the media gave me hope.

We covered a lot:

🚩How insular the industry has become

🚩How we’ve grown distrustful of each other, according to Edelman’s Trust Barometer

🚩How most of us now get our news on social, where misinformation moves fastest, per journalist @maria_ressa

✅We also got practical: how to fact-check your own feed, what resources exist, and what we still need to build

Here’s the thing about radical optimism: It’s not saying “everything will be fine.” It’s seeing exactly how broken something is and showing up. For the people that can show up, hope is a choice, not a mood.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the state of media and news, you’re not alone. I’m a journalist of 10 years and have felt it myself. We are in an unprecedented era for news consumption where media literacy for today has never been more important.

➡️Nearly 60% of us are consuming news on social media, where misinformation spreads faster than ever, per MIT studies.

Join me and @after5society on July 8 to discuss how journalistic principles can help us approach vetting our sources today and what questions remain to build a healthy media ecosystem. Hope to see you there. 📝

Traditional news is having a trust crisis, and creators are filling the gap.

A new @Reuters report found that 50% of news consumers now get their information from general content creators instead of traditional outlets. The reason? They (we!) are “entertaining, easier to understand, and relatable.”

But here’s what that shift really means: impartial reporting isn’t enough anymore. Audiences don’t just want the facts, they want to know why you care about the story. They want context, perspective, a thesis statement that makes them care too.

As someone who’s covered news for 10 years, I see this playing out every day. The old model of “just report what happened” doesn’t work when trust in institutions is at an all-time low. People are choosing voices they connect with over credentials they don’t trust.

The question I keep coming back to: how insular will our information ecosystems become when we all pick our own narrators?

A recent report from @reuters on the state of digital news found that 62% of news consumers are worried about fake news online. A major part of the equation is media literacy and how it translates to today.

➡️ If you’re a content creator informing your communities or a journalist going independent, you’re going to want to check out the Content Creator Toolkit from The Independent Journalism Atlas and today’s event in Chicago hosted by @this_is_project_c.

It’s the kind of guide I wish I had when I got started in this space, and it makes total sense a group of journalists would pull this together and make sure you get your operations and money right. Infrastructure like this will also be critical for the next frontier of journalism and developing credible brands.

The next frontier of journalism has reporters and content creation working closer than ever. It was time we address it, and honestly I now notice it’s something we had done at @monedamoves for years.

These research hubs, led by real journalists created a kit that’s meant to help you if you’re doing coverage of your communities: from contracts to pay, and best practices. Thank you for putting it together, and it was neat seeing other peers in this space too! ⚡️

Who we trust for information is more decentralized than ever, and it didn’t happen by accident.

I’ve spent 15 years in media, and have seen the shift first hand as I reported for national business outlets, launched my own media venture, and led content strategy for Fortune 500 companies.

When information can be found everywhere, having a media literacy that stands to the environment today is more essential than ever.

On June 30 I’m collaborating with @after5society and breaking down where that trust stands today, how to actually apply media literacy right now, what flooding the zone did to our information ecosystem, and how to spot what’s credible. We’ll close with what we need next.

For those who have sent me musings on this topic, thank you! There’s more to come.

Steal This Story Please is a call to action for our time. Scarier than most horror films, and it just happens to be a documentary.

A big takeaway: As corporate media keeps consolidating, independent editorial judgment and voicing it is essential.

Amy Goodman has been running @democracynow since 1996, and this film captures what three decades of that actually looks like. From covering U.S. involvement in the 1991 East Timor massacre to how an American oil company silenced protestors in the Niger Delta, to consistent coverage on Gaza.

A sitting president cold-calling her radio station expecting two minutes of softballs, and leaving 30 minutes later having been pressed on NAFTA and mass incarceration….by a journalist, Amy Goodman.

Her cohost Nermeen Shaikh put it simply: their job is expanding the frame and centering the people left out of it. I haven’t stopped thinking about that framing since.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist @maria_ressa has a warning: the information system is working exactly as designed…just not for you.

Here’s a red flag checklist inspired by the reporter with nearly 40 years of experience and having built a platform for uncompromising journalism for spotting what’s NOT credible.

90% of folks we surveyed said they question the news they consume OFTEN.

And I’m so glad I asked. (Done here on IG) It proves we are living in a credibility crisis, and that now more than ever we need a checks and balances system for our news information.

Solutions to this is what we’re building over at @projectreliable.

Thanks to all who voted, and for folks not questioning their outlets, we want to know: where are you getting your reliable news?

Earned media is a business decision. At Nasdaq, we developed social strategy for IPO day as companies listed.

The numbers matter.

But how a company tells the story around those numbers? That moves markets too.

The stories we tell, and how credibly we tell them, have real stakes.

That’s why I am building @projectreliable. We help demystify credibility, so brands can build it and the layman understands it.

Journalists ask these before trusting a news source, and you should too. ⬇️

→ What is the infrastructure of this news outlet? Interrogate who owns the publisher, and what their incentives are.

→ Is this a primary source? Understand whether the person there to speak about it firsthand or otherwise someone who holds credentials of some kind to speak expertly on the topic.

→ What’s the source behind the source? Know what research, studies are being cited as a way to understand whether there’s vested interest behind the facts being presented.

Save this. As traditional news infrastructure erodes, media literacy just became more important than ever. From someone with 10 years in journalism and strategy.
