Father’s Day is coming up and as parents, there is nothing more precious to us than our own children. Second to them, the most precious thing to us is the safety of the customers that visit the farm.Drowning is an unbearable loss. As we try to spread water safety education, sometimes guests who fail our swim test make comments about it’s difficulty, it’s unnecessary, or that our lifeguards poorly grade their swimming. Since 2014 we have required lifejackets at all events involving swimming. Those ages 12+ must pass a swim test if they wish to swim without a lifejacket. Our swim test is graded by lifeguards and aligns with American Red Cross recommendations. Our lifeguards are trained and skilled at determining a swimmer’s “watermanship” specifically for our particular aquatic environment. Our lifeguards watching the test have to be unanimous that someone has passed and it falls on one lifeguard to give the news of a pass or fail.Sometimes people are disappointed that they, or their child, failed the swim test and take this personally, becoming argumentative. We wish parents would know that we lifeguard with love in our hearts for the safety of their children. Open water is unforgiving and will drown all alike.We have built our lifeguard team from the ground up. The 50+ members are comprised of Eagle Scouts, Valedictorians, and collegiate athletes but more importantly, they are kind and compassionate. Giving news of not passing a test is never fun. We’d like our community to understand why we take water safety seriously. The links below can explain it much better than we can. The first two are articles we have our lifeguard’s study. Life jackets are required to swim in the quarry unless you take and pass the swim test.Our swim test is designed to measure an individuals water competency in this aquatic environment. Those who pass may swim without a life jacket. The swim test is optional and is not required during your visit! Life jackets are required if you don’t take or pass the swim test, and you can do everything at the quarry with a life jacket!
