Dad tipped his hat at a lady one time and smiled as we were passing by. She smiled back. I was about six, and it was the moment that tipping one’s hat came into my awareness of gracious ways of being.Dad was a Southerner who, although he DID lose his accent, had that certain grace so many Southerners have.So, tipping one’s hat to the passerby. Memorial Day is remembering those who have lost their lives serving in a war, defending their country.It is horrifying that these deaths are so often unnecessary. It is disgusting that the men starting the wars are not the ones actually fighting and dying in these wars.It is outrageous that these wars are so often manufactured for the financial gain of those declaring war.Today I am grateful that I have never lost a family member in a war.I feel such regret for the young lives that have been lost. And for the unbearable pain of their families.But, it’s a beautiful May here in Oregon. The purity of nature. The depth of the blue sky. The air softening.I’m wearing my Buddha necklace, given to me by my AA sponsor years ago.I’m trusting in the future while holding my nose at the current situation here in the States.Have a beautiful Memorial Day Monday.
