📢 We are officially in the midst of a government shutdown.

Here’s what that means for YOU 👇

🚨 1. Federal workers:
• More than 2 million federal employees face furloughs or delayed paychecks.
• “Essential” employees (like TSA, border patrol, air traffic controllers) still work — but without pay until funding resumes.

💸 2. Everyday Americans:
• Social Security & Medicare checks will continue, but customer service delays are likely.
• Passport & visa processing could slow down drastically.
• National parks & museums may close or operate without staff → expect overflowing trash & closed restrooms.

🍎 3. Families & communities:
• WIC & SNAP food assistance programs could be disrupted if the shutdown lasts more than a few weeks.
• Head Start programs for early childhood education could lose funding.
• Small business loans & housing programs may pause, causing ripple effects across communities.

🩺 4. Health & safety:
• Many public health programs, including some CDC operations, may scale back surveillance and staffing.
• FDA food inspections and environmental monitoring may be delayed, impacting safety.

🛑 5. Broader impact:
• Shutdowns slow the economy, delay critical services, and erode public trust.
• The longer it lasts, the more severe the consequences for workers, families, and communities.

⸻

💬 Bottom line: Government shutdowns aren’t just politics—they hit real people, in real time.

New Episode of Pulse Check WI!

Justice for Jeremy | Pulse Check Wisconsin

What happens when someone who cannot speak for themselves is harmed while in the care of people entrusted to protect them?

In this episode of Pulse Check Wisconsin, Dr. Christopher Ford sits down with Colleen Bittner, the mother of 26-year-old Jeremy McCarthy, a Wisconsin man with cerebral palsy who is non-verbal, cannot walk independently, and relies on others for many aspects of his daily care.

Jeremy suffered a devastating leg injury while living in a group home in Menomonee Falls. His family has been left searching for answers about what happened, who should be held accountable, and how we prevent something like this from happening to another vulnerable person.

Colleen shares who Jeremy is beyond this story, what her family experienced after learning of his injuries, what his recovery has looked like, and what justice for Jeremy means to them.

But this conversation goes beyond one family.

We examine larger questions surrounding Wisconsin’s group-home system: oversight, transparency, caregiver accountability, and whether enough protections exist for people who cannot independently report abuse or neglect.

Jeremy cannot tell us in his own words what happened to him. That makes our responsibility to listen, investigate, protect, and demand accountability even greater.

This is Justice for Jeremy.

Watch, share Jeremy’s story, and join the conversation.

To everyone who showed support on my last post—thank you. Your messages, comments, and photos have meant more than I can express.

I’m equally grateful to be part of the incredible medical community we’ve built together.

We know what we lived through.

We remember the uncertainty of facing a virus no one fully understood. We remember the long shifts, the impossible decisions, and the patients we couldn’t save despite giving everything we had. We remember the colleagues, friends, and loved ones we lost. We know what death looked like during those years, and we know what that experience demanded of our families and our communities.

For a brief moment, healthcare workers were called heroes. Then, as science became politicized, many of the very people who dedicated their lives to caring for others were unfairly cast as villains by those who chose misinformation over evidence.

We will not be silent.

We will continue to speak out. We will continue to stand up for science, for evidence-based medicine, and for the patients and communities who trust us with their lives. We did not spend years training, learning, and sacrificing to stand by while history is rewritten.

The truth matters.

To everyone who has shared your stories and sent your photos—please keep them coming. Keep telling your story. Keep reminding people what really happened. Together, we can ensure that the lessons, the sacrifices, and the humanity of those years are never forgotten.

— Dr. Christopher J. Ford, MD, FACEP by @pulsecheckwi

Let me make this clear.

Today, you’re going to hear a lot of revisionist history from people who were never at the bedside during COVID-19. Many of them never experienced what it was like to make life-and-death decisions while hospitals were overwhelmed, families were separated, and healthcare workers gave everything they had.

COVID-19 was science in motion. The scientific method isn’t static—it evolves as evidence evolves. We learned. We adapted. We changed course when the data demanded it. That’s not failure. That’s exactly how science is supposed to work.

We lost far too many people. Every loss mattered. But because of the tireless work of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, researchers, scientists, and countless other healthcare professionals, we saved millions more through evidence-based medicine and scientific advancement.

Do not allow this witch hunt to rewrite history.

This isn’t just about COVID. It’s about a broader effort to rewrite our nation’s history—to erase complexity, dismiss expertise, and recast those responsible as heroes while ignoring the people who actually carried us through one of the darkest moments in modern history.

The real heroes will not stand by silently.

This November, let’s choose facts over fiction, science over conspiracy, and leadership over revisionism.

Let’s make a change—together.

— Dr. Christopher Ford, MD, FACEP
