picked up a ricoh a few months ago, having some fun. by @q.dannytran

april 30 today. another year, 51 years now since a country reunified, a war won, a war lost..lives torn apart on both sides. it’s difficult and confusing when I think how this has shaped my life, as a result of it having shaped my parents lives. then i remind myself, they’re still living thru it. it wasn’t generations ago. that wound is still fresh, that pain, fear.. that loss.

i guess thinking about it doesn’t help leave it in the past. should we? dominos lined up and knocked over, passed on to the next generation. the year did go by quick. plenty of distractions, there was real joy too. and it wouldn’t be joy without pain.

im sharing some personal photos of my parents when we went to Vietnam. there’s a quiet strength i see in them. perseverance i witnessed in my upbringing, that i kind of witness in all their actions. idk i think about them a lot more these days. how they were just kids figuring life out for the first time, how we were all figuring this shit out for the first time — no guide book, no history except what we’re writing. idk… tell your people you love them, show them that love however you can. by @q.dannytran

April 30 again. 50 years of rebuilding lives and reinventing country. My people fought back imperialist forces and reunified their home. My people feared for their lives and had to escape their homes. War, liberation, anger, joy, fear, trust, love, hate.

I wouldnt be here and who I am today without the war. And Vietnam wouldn’t be free and thriving without the war. So much can exist at one time, what exists in me?

Thinking about family today, here in the states, in other countries, and those back home in Vietnam. No matter where my people are, we all call going to Vietnam as going home, đi về VietNam. by @q.dannytran

I hardly share photos these days. fear of being lost in the ether? holding out to make a zine? Whatever the reason or excuse, they end up sitting on a hard drive unseen. Here are some from over the years. by @q.dannytran

April 30th come and gone again. A date 49 years ago that left a country and its people changed. Better or worse? I wouldnt be here if it weren’t for that date. The Viets that I’ve known my whole life, every Vietnamese restaurant, each bowl of phở, bánh mì, cơm tấm, wouldn’t really be in all these places outside of Vietnam if it weren’t for that date. A reminder of our diaspora.

I got to visit Vietnam with my family this past Tết - Lunar New Year. Many call it “going back home (đi về)”, even I say that despite being born 8,000 miles away. But it felt like a homecoming. My dad reunited with family and friends he left 40 years ago, my mom showing us the home she grew up in next to the train tracks, the family that knew so much about me even tho I’ve never met them before. I got to witness so much joy and love that could only exist because it persisted and endured so much pain. Are the ripples of April 30th 1975 flattening? Will enough time ever pass? by @q.dannytran
