This week's Blues & Bourbon goes back to Room 414. Ninety years after Robert Johnson recorded at San Antonio's Gunter Hotel, his grandson Steven Johnson is preparing to record those songs in the same room. Miko Marks draws on her Flint childhood for her new blues album Hell or High Water, and Antone's brings Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood together on a Clifton Chenier song. On the whiskey side, Four Roses finishes Bourbon in Japanese chestnut, Milam & Greene bottles nearly eight years of Texas heat, Garrison Brothers prepares its second bottled-in-bond, and four ROW 94 barrels settle in at the Grand Ole Opry. @chattwhiskey and New Riff revisit their Confluence Project at seven and a half years. Every road should end at the ocean. The End of the Trail sign on the Santa Monica Pier was dedicated on Veterans Day 2009, on the road's 83rd anniversary, after Route 66 fan Dan Rice decided the western end deserved a proper goodbye. His 66-to-Cali shop still anchors the spot. Technically, the old highway ended a few blocks east, at Lincoln and Olympic. Spiritually, it ends here, with the Ferris wheel turning and the Pacific doing what it does. Get the photo. Stay for the sunset. You earned it. https://r66radio.com Been here, or is it on your list? November on Route 66 means packing for two seasons. Desert days run warm and desert nights bite, sometimes in the same hour. Dress in layers, carry more water than you think you need, and top off the tank before the long gaps. The run west of Kingman into the Black Mountains twists and climbs, so fill up in town and take the curves slow. Check your tires, charge the camera, and keep a jacket within reach. The best seat on the road is a warm one with the window down. Save this for your trip folder. https://r66radio.com What's your must-stop on the Mother Road? This week's Bluegrass & BBQ is about the hands that keep it going. Bluegrass mourns Bill Clifton, who died October 30 at 95 after carrying the music to British audiences. In North Carolina, Wayne Henderson's thousandth guitar drew some 600 people and more than 150 of his instruments. Zach Top sent a $10,000 CMA Foundation grant to Taylor's Camp, where he learned as a child. Plus new music from High Fidelity, Caroline Owens and Balsam Range, and Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass joining Turnberry Records. On the barbecue side, Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Q closed in Allen while Class 1 Barbeque opened its permanent Amarillo home, and ThermoWorks' RFX MEAT Mini tackles small cuts. Which Route 66 stop are you? A) A concrete teepee under desert stars in Holbrook B) A burger with a prank menu at the Snow Cap in Seligman C) A selfie with a burro in Oatman D) Toes in the Pacific at the Santa Monica Pier Drop your letter in the comments, and tag the friend who matches each one. We will read every answer and argue about them loudly. The road has room for all four of you. https://r66radio.com #Route66 #Route66Centennial #Americana #R66Radio #Route66Quiz by @radio66americana
2,448 miles. That is the whole dream, measured. Chicago to Santa Monica, eight states, about 2,448 miles of Mother Road. Here is the only math that matters: at 250 miles a day, give it ten days. At 300, about eight. Faster than that and you are driving past the reason you came. The towns are the trip. Plan your fuel before the long desert gaps, keep a paper map in the glove box for the dead zones, and let a full tank and an empty schedule do the rest. How many days would you take? The locals here have four legs and strong opinions. One of our 100 Experiences That Are Still America: stand on the main street of Oatman, Arizona, and hand a carrot to a wild burro. They are the descendants of the pack animals miners set loose when the gold ran out, and they wander into town at dawn like they own the place, which, frankly, they do. This old mining town also hosted Clark Gable and Carole Lombard's honeymoon at the Oatman Hotel in 1939, and the Oatman Ghost Rider Gunfighters still stage shootouts in the street. Buy the burro chow in town. Skip the junk food. The burros thank you. https://r66radio.com Tried this one, or is it on your list? Americana at the Movies: The Road Keeps the Story. An aging trucker in Idaho, the writer behind Lonesome Dove, Bobby Rush at 92, Jimmy Buffett's first Coral Reefers and a New Orleans marching band: this week's films are built on work, music and the miles between places. Some towns refuse to stay buried. Two Guns, Arizona, between Winslow and Flagstaff, is a true Route 66 ghost town, and it comes with the road's darkest legend. They say that in 1878, Navajo warriors trapped 42 Apache raiders in a cave here and set the entrance ablaze. In the 1920s, a showman called Harry "Two Guns" Miller built a zoo, a trading post, and a tourist trap on the site, and legend says he sold skulls from the cave as souvenirs. Bad luck mauled him like one of his own lions. Some historians say Miller invented the whole tale to sell tickets. Standing in the ruins at dusk, you may decide for yourself. Happy Halloween, travelers. Drive careful out there. Been here, or is it on your list? Where the gumbo pot meets the dance floor.
