Operation Randori Behak

THE OPERATOR

Operation Randori Behak was a high-risk counter-infiltration mission launched by the Indian Army in the snow-covered mountains of the Kupwara district near the Line of Control (LoC). The mission ended in one of the most intense close-quarter battles in Kashmir in recent history. The operation began on April 1, 2020, after soldiers posted in the area detected movements of infiltrating terrorists. These terrorists crossed into Indian territory and were being tracked intermittently. On April 3, their trail was picked up again, and it became evident that an encounter was imminent. The infiltrators had abandoned heavy gear, suggesting they knew they were being hunted. The army managed to trap the group between the LoC to the north and the Shamshabari Range to the south. Special Forces were brought in to end the infiltration attempt. On April 4, 2020, a squad from 4 PARA (Special Forces) was air-dropped by helicopter into the Randori Behak area of Kupwara, tasked with neutralizing infiltrating terrorists in deep snow and extreme terrain. By early morning on April 5, while patrolling along a narrow snow cornice (an overhanging, unsupported mass of hardened snow), two commandos-Sepoy Bal Krishan and Sepoy Amit Kumar-fell through the ice,To every man upon this earth, Death cometh soon or late.
