BOOK DESCRIPTION From The Publisher:

For My Grandmother is a photobook by Rammy Narula that grew from a period of reflection on his relationship with his grandmother and his family. Known primarily for his street photography, Narula turns his attention inward here, finding meaning in familiar gestures, everyday moments, and the people closest to him. It is one of his most personal bodies of work.

His grandmother had long hoped that he would one day have a child, and she was able to spend time with his son while she was still with the family. The title For My Grandmother carries this double meaning, referring both to the book and, quietly, to his son. Through photographs made across different periods of his life, the work reflects on the ways we remember people, the meaning we attach to photographs, and the connections that continue through generations.

WORKSHOP! January & March 2027. Live online via Zoom. With schedules that work for Asia, Europe, UAE, US time zones

Have you been reading my posts the last year or so? Would you like to learn more about how to think about your work, establish a direction and build a voice?

Low commitment. 4 sessions. Assignments that allow both making new work, and looking back at old work.

Join a community of over a hundred photographers that have worked with me in the last couple of years, where I also offer meetings and free classes few times a year.

You don’t have to be a street photographer to benefit from this. All you need to know is how to use a camera, or have been doing it a while but would like some more directions.

I also include a 1:1 complimentary session for a deeper dive after the workshop.

“For My Grandmother” Exhibit and Gallery walkthrough.

Super excited to be sharing this video with you all of the show and @kathmanduphotobkk Gallery! 💚

The show was curated by @akkaranaktamna Akkara Naktamna, one of the most thoughtful and respected voices in Thailand's photography community.

Akkara and I have known each other for over a decade, and over the years I'd get the occasional nudge from him about putting my work together for an exhibition. I'm grateful for those nudges, because by the time I had work I felt was worth showing, I had zero doubt about who I wanted to curate it. He could have said no. I was super happy that he didn't.

The show goes on until November 28. And there’s an artist talk this Saturday November 7th at 2pm.

The launch also came with a book, and is still available. If you’d like a copy, send me a DM. US$30 (plus another $20-30 for shipping depending on where you are in the world). by @rammynarula

Non separation. by @rammynarula

When Instagram introduced music to the posts and even encouraged using it to reach more people, I was initially very reluctant.

As we’ve all come to realize, this place isn’t photography-focused anymore. It started that way, but it’s not where it’s at.

So what is this place? Does it no longer have a use? If we must play by the game, then do we just quit the game? I’m not sure.

I’ve thought a lot about what I would do. But I haven’t quite made the changes. I’ve found a lot of like minded people through this place.

And the last few years that I’ve shifted my focus to teaching, I’ve found even more people here. People who want to connect deeply.

Not all of us came here directly for photography. It is photography that we use to share ourselves with, but ultimately many of us came online to find connection. So long as I can still connect with one person here with my work, then it is worth it.

Music is part of that connection for me. I choose them very deliberately.

I will inevitably add different channels to share my work, since the river seems ever flowing in different directions. Whatever happens, I’ll still find _you_ somewhere. 💚 by @rammynarula

I’ll begin by saying I have never liked it when things don’t go as planned. And I’ll immediately add that my life has very rarely gone according to plan.

I didn’t plan to do photography at all. It came to me as a suggestion, and I had no idea where it was going to go.

Of course, as soon as I adopted it as “mine,” I tried to control the journey again. I worked hard. Practiced. Made a book. Exhibited. Traveled. I was all in. I am always all in, until things don’t go according to plan. Then I may drag my feet a bit.

And that’s why I compare a photography journey to a road trip. Because there will always be unplanned stops. Someone needs to use the bathroom. An accident on the road forces a detour. You didn’t plan your fuel correctly. Or you forgot a holder for your phone, and now you’re wondering how to look at the map without holding your phone the whole way.

Of course, the car can also break down entirely, and there’s nothing you can really do about it except respond to the moment.

I don’t think much has gone according to plan in my photographic journey. There have been ups and downs. Serious ups. And serious downs. The kind that make you wonder where this never-ending valley is going, and if the map is even correct.

It wasn’t until the last few years that I realized it wasn’t the car or the journey that was the problem. It was that I was trying to control what it looked like and how it was shaped.

I was busy trying to change what already was. What was outside and out of my control. I became busy. Busy fixing instead of living. And sometimes not wanting to do it anymore.

What I could do, and have been learning to do, is respond to it like I would on a road trip. I’m already here. Each unexpected stop gives me a different view of the trip. Gives me a life experience I didn’t ask for but absolutely needed. In not trying to control what it looks like, I am, in fact, in complete control. Of my own response. My own feelings. And what to make of the entire journey. by @rammynarula

Excited to receive the above photo from @tavepong_street and to share that my work is being exhibited at the 20th China International Photography Exhibition in Lishui, China, at the invitation of the China Photographers Association.

Curated by @chixun Xun Michael Chi, Professor of Visual Communication Design at the University of Macau. Thank you Xun for this curation. 🙏🏽🎉

You can scroll to see the images on display.

This is a group exhibition and congratulations to Tavepong and other photographers (from Thailand others) for being featured. According to him, the prints are super big! by @rammynarula

Some months are just so packed it needs a second update. In the first October update I shared what was about to happen. And now all that has happened I thought it was a good time to reflect.

The book launched last week, and the exhibition happened this past Saturday. After 7 months of procrastinating, planning, executing it felt like an achievement. I must admit I don’t think it has all sunk in yet.

In the last 7 months I’ve been ill twice, got sick with Shingles and then Flu A. Both times reacted terribly to the medicines and became more sick.

There were times I wondered if I was doing too much and needed to reduce the load, maybe delay some stuff, but I decided against that and kept everything as planned.

I’m glad I did that because I think I showed myself that I could do it. And also many times in the past I believe getting sick was a way for me to shrink instead of grow. Being able to keep doing things when not feeling well was in itself breaking a kind of spell I’ve had on myself for decades.

I have really enjoyed and appreciated all the support and love received these past months. Unlike the launch of my first book, Platform 10, with this project I have been less nervous, less restless, and have been able to enjoy the process a lot more.

I also want to reserve special thank you for the people who followed the journey and the development closely. You’re all champions to me. 🏆

I’ve also been able to celebrate this one with my mother, my aunts, my cousins. This project is dedicated to our mother and grandmother, and I’ll have a small family event with them in a couple of weeks. Very much looking forward to that.

There’s more to come, and if you’re interested to be a part of the process, to hear about it, and get more behind the scenes stuff, drop me a message and I’ll include you in future updates that’s not only on Instagram.

‘Til the next one. 💚 by @rammynarula
