POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi everyone, Ryan here. You might’ve noticed I haven’t been going to the pop-ups for The Interchange. I’ve been in New Zealand with my partner since January on a working holiday visa.

We had the opportunity to work on a llama farm in a surf town called Kaikoura. It was amazing to see how a small town runs, especially their waste collection. They have a recycling centre where everything must be sorted, with labels for different plastics. Food waste goes into a compost bin, and other non-recyclable waste disposal is charged by weight. This made us more conscious about what we throw away - now that it costs money to throw stuff.

There’s also a thrift store near the recycling centre. It’s our favourite since there’s not much around. Everything that can be fixed doesn’t go to waste - there are extra parts for toilets, washing machines, bicycles, etc. They also have warm clothes, furniture, books, and bed linen. We got a set of curtains for $2 and altered them for a cabin on the farm. I also made a few tote bags and pouches from items I found around here.

The farm has an agreement with the nearby supermarket to collect their leftovers and ugly foods and we sort them in the feed room daily. We feed the good stuff to the animals and the rest is for composting. I’m surprised at the amount of fruit, bread and vegetables they throw out daily; it’s a great way to minimise waste and costs.

We find it exciting to see different thrift stores and recycling centres in various cities and towns. It gives insight into how councils handle waste efficiently for such a huge country.

So much to see and so little time. I’ll catch up with everyone real soon 🙏🏼 by @ravenous_ryan

We kept our @ikeasingapore plastic packaging and made a cardholder out of it. 📦

Here’s what that process actually looks like:
1️⃣ Heat fusing bonds the plastic layers into a single firm sheet
2️⃣ Cut ✂️
3️⃣ Sew, done. 🪡

What looks like waste is actually a material waiting to be worked with. 🗑️ by @ravenous_ryan

A month late (oops 😅) but we just had to share!

Thank you Mei Ling Residents’ Network (special thanks to Nigel 🫶) for having us at Mei Ling Day 💚 We had such a lovely time meeting our neighbours and sharing what we’ve been creating here at The Interchange. It’s always such a joy to chat with everyone and connect through stories, ideas, and circular creations.

It feels like a full circle moment, from setting up our little studio in Mei Ling, to running our first public workshop in the food centre and now celebrating Mei Ling Day alongside many of our partners. 💫

This community showcase was made possible with the support of the @msesingapore Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment’s SG Eco Fund. We’re deeply grateful for the support that connected people, enabled this programme, and helped make this impact possible. 🙏 by @ravenous_ryan

Bright and early Sunday morning, we wrapped up our booth at @syncfestival.sg at @tzuchisg.hyc ! 🌞

Huge thanks to everyone who dropped by to chat, connect, and support what we do. 🫶🫶🫶

We had the honour of sharing our upcycled rice bag products with @leehuiying.sg , and it was such a joy to meet and reconnect with friends:

✨ Reunited with Sherman after ages
✨ Customer turned Booth neighbour - hi Judith @suiinaturals_zeromultiple !
✨ Finally met @tsutsumisquare in person
✨ And yes, Nic’s “fan club” was out in full force 😆

It’s always extra special when we get to talk about our work in person so thank you Sync Festival for the invite! by @ravenous_ryan

We gave @msesingapore SG Go Green 2024 PVC banners a second life by transforming them into custom boxes for @mono.foods to support their mission of reducing food waste in Singapore. These boxes are made by 廖佬 @ravenous_ryan 🐉!

Huge thanks for the opportunity to collaborate! 🙏 This is just a tiny prototype, and we’re excited to explore even more ways to create useful items from waste streams.

Using waste to reduce waste? Now that’s a win-win we love. 🙌✨ by @ravenous_ryan

Wrapped up our booth at Unpackt’s Farmers’ Market in @mandaiwildlifereserve ! 🌱🧵

This weekend was full of stitching, stories, and sweet surprises, from custom pouches to a teeny tiny tee for an even tinier Labubu 👕

We made:
🧻 A tissue holder for @fumblesjumbles Elyse
👜 A tiny pink bag for Hillary from @cloop.sg
📏 Two custom pouches for Annette
♻️ A rice bag + foil pouch for @unpackt.sg Florence
🧸 And a tiny T-shirt for a tiny Labubu

Met old and new friends, and even had a surprise visit from @hello.little.chompers 💚

Oh and we found a tiny book with beautiful handwritten notes… still hoping to reunite it with its owner! 📖✨

Now… time to KO 😴 by @ravenous_ryan

We brought our sewing machine to the river! 🧵🌊

Last Saturday evening, after packing up at Vidacity, we made our way to Riverside Vibes at Robertson Quay and wow, the vibes were immaculate. Good vibes, good breeze, and great conversations all around.

It was a joy sharing what we’ve been making both as individual makers and a growing community. Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by, chatted, and brought home a piece of our upcycled rice bag creations! ♻️

We also had the honour of speaking with Advisor @joanpereira67 about bringing this work to more neighbourhoods and even ran into a long-lost friend from our 2016 film One Hour to Daylight! 🎬

Still can’t believe we were literally sewing by the quay. What a night.

Thank you @ourhendersondawson , @hendersoncclub , @theismailisea , @msesingapore , @naturekakis_network for organising this event!

Where shall we bring the sewing machine to next? 🪡🧵📍 by @ravenous_ryan

Happy 5th anniversary SG Eco Fund! 💚

We had such a great time sharing what we do at The Interchange from showcasing our upcycled rice bag creations to demonstrating how the sewing machine works (yes, one curious attendee even gave it a go 👏). We’re also excited about the new connections made and potential collaborations with other passionate organisations who were present!

One of the biggest highlights? Stitching up a rice bag pouch and card holder on the spot for SPS @hanyangoh and Minister @gracefu.hy . We also gifted Minister Grace Fu a special sling bag made by @ravenous_ryan from upcycled Go Green SG street banners ♻️ Being able to personally introduce our project and creations to them was such a special moment 🥹✨

Huge thanks to @msesingapore and the Eco Fund team for the opportunity and support in helping us bring circular ideas to life 💫

Getting ready for tomorrow’s big day at @vidacity.sg for @msesingapore SG Eco Fund’s 5th Anniversary Event! 🎉

We’re wiping down our trusty @elna.singapore sewing machine and making sure every zip is smooth smooth 🧼✨ because when you’re sewing with rice bags, even the smallest details matter.

Catch us there with our upcycled creations, live demos, and some of the quirkiest waste-to-wonder ideas around 💚♻️

Let’s celebrate the amazing green projects happening all across Singapore and maybe stitch up something cool together too 👀🧵
