Sana’a: An Ongoing Series

Architecture is more than buildings.

In this ongoing body of work, Sana’a becomes a space for exploring memory, identity, belonging, and resilience.

My interpretation of the city is not a traditional one. What has always remained in my memory is the white gypsum ornamentation that distinguishes Sana’a’s architecture—the intricate patterns adorning facades and the delicate details found in its iconic qamariyas (stained-glass windows).

The recurring white forms in my paintings are inspired by these architectural elements. For me, white symbolizes peace. Despite everything Sana’a has endured, and despite the changing colors and realities surrounding it, its white patterns remain a symbol of warmth, hope, and continuity.

Through color, texture, and abstraction, I seek not to document the city as it appears, but to express how it lives in memory and emotion.

This series is still evolving and remains an ongoing artistic project through which I continue to explore my relationship with Sana’a and the stories embedded within its architecture.

✨️📝 “All artworks in the ‘Sanaa Series’ are entirely original and created by me. They reflect my personal artistic vision of the city of Sanaa as I experience it through memory and imagination.”

Hello, I’m Rawiya Mohammed Al-Atwany, a Yemeni visual artist from Taiz, currently based in Sana’a.

I believe that art is more than creating images or something beautiful to look at; for me, it is an expression, a connection, and a form of self-discovery.

Through my work, I explore identity, memory, heritage, and human stories. Inspired by Yemeni culture and everyday experiences, I continue to experiment with different visual languages that express what touches me and moves me emotionally.

In recent years, I have become increasingly passionate about working with children, helping them discover creativity, self-confidence, and ways to express themselves through art.

This page brings together my artworks, exhibitions, and workshops, alongside the creative journey that I continue to build day by day.

Thank you for being part of this journey.🤍🤍

Painting has always been my way of expressing myself and understanding the world around me. Over time, I began to realize that the impact of art can go far beyond the canvas and reach people in a more personal and meaningful way.
This is how @colorful.fingers_ began—as an art project that brings together creativity, learning, and self-expression. As it continues to grow, I hope it will evolve into an art initiative that carries my vision and reaches people of all ages.
It was never meant to be just a series of art workshops. My vision is to create a safe and welcoming space where people can express themselves, discover their creativity, and build confidence through art.
Although my journey began with children, my dream is for Colorful Fingers to grow into a creative space for children, youth, and adults alike. I truly believe that art belongs to everyone, regardless of age, and that creativity is a language we all share.
For me, this project marks the beginning of a new chapter in my artistic journey—one where I not only create art, but also create meaningful experiences through it. 🎨🤍

This was never just an eye. It was something I left unfinished inside me for six months. I thought it would be calm and optimistic. But it came back as something else —
I was opening a window onto what cannot be said.
A mixture of longing, silence, emotional chaos, and inner turbulence.
But also a desire to survive and to resist.✨️

When I painted the first piece, my emotions were somewhat hidden between the colors. There were bright tones—purple, white, and others—and I painted it while the weather was rainy.
But when the rain calmed and the thunder faded, the emotions began to clear, and new colors started to emerge like green, yellow, orange, and brown. Even the gaze of the eye and the feelings within it changed for me. When I finished it and looked at it again, I felt it carried fear, fragmentation, and anticipation—and a question: I wonder what tomorrow will be like?

When I painted this piece and the one after it , I didn’t have any clear image or prior inspiration. All I had in my mind was a loud noise—feelings of estrangement, confusion, and fear—but it wasn’t very visible here…
I feel the eye I painted was more curious than afraid, as if it was asking me: “What now? What are you going to do?”🩵🤍

Small details.. but they carry a world of emotions and memories deeply engraved in the heart and mind 🇯🇴✨

🪟While organizing my archive, I came across these photos from a traditional Yemeni Qamariyah workshop. They instantly brought back memories, and I felt they deserved a place here.

✨️It was a truly enriching experience that allowed me to learn about one of Yemen's most beautiful traditional crafts and experience the process of making it by hand. It gave me a much deeper appreciation for the artisans who have devoted their lives to preserving this heritage.

🤍As I looked through these photos, I found myself remembering Uncle Yaseen Ghalib. May he rest in peace. He was the one who told me about this workshop and registered my name. Without him, I would never have had the opportunity to be part of this experience.
He was one of the people who believed in me. He saw something in me before I could fully see it in myself.
I only hope that I have become the person he believed I could be.💐🤍 by @rawiyamoh

🎨✨
This was my first trip outside Yemen, and one of the things I was most excited about was visiting art spaces and exhibitions.

Being surrounded by different artistic experiences, observing details, exhibition designs, and the stories behind each artwork was truly inspiring.

As an artist, I believe that travel is more than moving from one place to another; it is an opportunity to see the world through new perspectives and discover new sources of inspiration.

These are a few moments from that experience that I believe will stay with me as part of my artistic journey for a long time.✨️✨️
