If the NHS values medical expertise, it must protect the training that creates it.

Reflecting on the findings of the RCP's Training physicians for the future report, Dr Max Thoburn explains why future physicians need both broad generalist capabilities and deep specialist expertise.

Doctors develop clinical judgement by managing uncertainty, balancing risk and taking graduated responsibility for increasingly complex care. They also need protected opportunities to build procedural, diagnostic and specialty expertise.

These capabilities require high-quality supervision, real-world experience and training opportunities that are protected when services come under pressure.

There is no single career pathway through medicine, and postgraduate training should reflect that reality.

Reflecting on the findings of the RCP's Training physicians for the future report, Dr Laura Bannon and Dr Sacha Moore argue for a system that recognises capability wherever it is developed, better supports clinical academic careers, and prepares physicians for changing models of care.

Flexibility should not be about lowering standards. It is about making training more relevant, responsive and aligned with modern medicine and what patients need now.

The future of the NHS depends on the doctors we train today.

Reflecting on the findings of the RCP's Training physicians for the future report, RCP president Professor Mumtaz Patel and RCP senior censor and vice president for education and training Dr Dan Furmedge argue that postgraduate medical education must be treated as a strategic investment, not an operational cost.

Training develops the consultants, clinical leaders, educators and researchers that patients will rely on in the future. Yet service pressure is squeezing out learning, supervision and protected educational activity.

The choice is not between training and patient care. High-quality training is one of the foundations of high-quality patient care.

Good medical training should not depend on luck, geography or the determination of individual resident doctors to overcome avoidable barriers.

Reflecting on the findings of the RCP's Training physicians for the future report, Dr Stephen Joseph and Dr Alexandra Pain argue that we already know what good training looks like: meaningful supervision, protected learning, useful assessment and supportive progression.

They explain why educational quality must be visible, measurable and accountable, with resident doctor experience at the centre of how training is assessed and improved.
