It’s been such an intense fall that I haven’t had a chance to post about @foodserviceequipsuppliesmag and @restaurantdesignmag’s FED summit! The two magazines bring together readers from across the foodservice and restaurant design communities to do some big-picture thinking and networking. It was a great event (if I do say so myself), programmed by @fes_editor, with input and help from our whole team! I even got to present some of rd+d’s reader survey results! The people were great, the Gwen hotel in Chicago was a dream, and the city was spectacular! by @rddeditorbex

Recently enjoyed a great meal at @johnsfoodandwine ! They were named @foodandwine Restaurant of the Year in September for their unusual operational approach. We sat at the bar and got full-service but guests in the dining room order at the counter, enjoy a view into the open kitchen, and food is delivered to them.

Also, in Chicago a lot of restaurants hide fees. This is all-inclusive with the tip factored in at the beginning.

Higher base wages support equitable staff compensation!

I’m still thinking about the lobster salad and the delicious cocktails! 🍸 by @rddeditorbex

I’m super excited to dig into this important history book!

It’s officially autumn. I wore a sweater to work for the first time since winter and the fall issue of @restaurantdesignmag was on my desk when I got here! It’s a beauty! If you’re a subscriber you should see it in the mail soon. If you’re not, what are you even doing?

Gonna get a pumpkin spice latte and lean in. ☕️ 🍁 🎃

Just got the photos back from @restaurantdesignmag Tour the Design Trends event sponsored by @emuamericas (they sponsored the whole thing plus a great stop at Goose Island’s Salt Shed Pub) and @middlebycorporation!

We visited a number of incredible spots with some incredible people. Full coverage will be in our next issue but check out rddmag.com under events for more photos and each stop.

Be sure to subscribe to @restaurantdesignmag to get a spot on our next tour (or to sponsor a future tour). by @rddeditorbex

Recently visited this adorable coffee-to-cocktails place in Detroit and I was entirely charmed by the vibe and the treats. by @rddeditorbex

In Detroit last weekend and got to have a cocktail at the gorgeous @thedetroitclub — don’t know the designer offhand but read they renovated the hotel/club in 2017! What a great place. by @rddeditorbex

I got to return to the metro Detroit area briefly this weekend for the first time in many years and made a point to stop at @vinsettagarage designed by @mcintosh_poris. This was a neat stop for many reasons — we’ve covered the restaurant in @restaurantdesignmag and the hospitality and food were top notch — but this place was always special to me and to my husband who took quite a few photos of it when it was a real garage, before we moved out of the Detroit area and to the Chicago area.

This is such a fascinating repurposed space that cleverly kept as much as they could from the original space to create a truly authentic and local experience.

The summer issue of @restaurantdesignmag has arrived and she’s a beauty! Our theme is the Architecture of Hospitality, and most of the articles revolve around create a hospitable environment, from the curb to the bar to the dining room! 🤩 by @rddeditorbex

Before I wrap the work week, I had to post about the amazing time I had curating and hosting @restaurantdesignmag’s Tour the Design Trends. We took two trolleys full of readers on a daylong tour of some key new restaurants and it was a 💥!

Locations are kept secret but I can now reveal them: @emuamericas sponsored the first stop as we kicked off at @gooseislandchicago’s Salt Shed Pub! From there we talked to the fine folks at @cryingtigerchicago (and @kittyscosmopolitanclub) where the Thai coladas were delish. Our next stop was @zarellachicago for amazing pizza and a secret basement room you have to see! From there we headed to @310cache for cocktails and charcuterie and a deep dive into their fascinating and compact operations. Our final stop was @susu.chicago, a Mediterranean-Asian steakhouse where their warm hospitality more than made up for the insane downpour outside.

Huge thanks to our sponsors @emuamericas and @middlebycorporation, thanks to all our attendees, and to all the restaurants that extended us such kind hospitality, delicious bites, and, most importantly, did brief Q&As with us to give our readers insights into their restaurant projects! What a day!

Full photos and more coming in a future issue of rd+d (and online at rddmag.com)!

Had a very busy and fun week at @hdexpo! I got to moderate a panel on Creating Immersive Dining Experiences, got to go on a silly side quest with my team (Wizard of Oz was a delight), met with tons of interesting and talented designers and saw a great many fantastic new products! by @rddeditorbex
