When folks get to know about my housing situation and the long-term battle we’ve been going through here, they often ask why we haven’t left our building. Besides the obviou$ reasons, the truth is, my mom is a pillar of our community. So many of our neighbors will tell you so. She has lived in our building for almost 40 years. She’s taught hundreds of students as a pre-K and Kindergarten teacher’s aid in this neighborhood. She is the warm demander archetype to a t: she is no nonsense on one hand and deeply warm and loving towards all of her kids. We can’t ever go out for a walk without little ones stopping to give her a hug parents waving her down from across the street or running into one of her students who’s in college now. My mom has made this her home for the majority of her life and she wants to stay. Slumlords try to break down people’s spirit, and that’s in part how neighborhoods end up gentrifying. They have certainly tried to break ours. But we will not be moved. Your support in this raffle will help us continue to be resilient in fighting for housing justice, not just for ourselves, but for our whole community. The raffle has been extended to June 10. Please continue to share, boost and enter. Thank you for all the continuous support 🤎 by @re_memberance

Our mutual aid space: ~Shifting Tides: an herbal peer support space on grief, burnout, and change~ is less than a week away. I chose to focus on grief, burnout and change because they’ve deeply shaped my personal experience of the past five years and I have witnessed them weigh heavy on the collective. I have not mastered navigating any of these themes by any means, but I know the moments when I went through it holding too much on my own (without sharing much of it with my community and falling back from my relationship with herbs) is when I struggled the most. With that in mind, I wanted to create a space for folks to be by herbs, sharing the profound impact the herbs have made as guides back to myself and anchor during these times and opening space folks to share their experience and wisdom as well. Drawing from learnings on Black, indigenous and folk herbalism, this peer support space will take a deep dive into our physical and mental experiences of grief burn out and change and introduce herbal allies that can help to restore us and build our capacity for the long-haul. And it’s an honor to do this work and support of a dear friend @sacharja_is_home who has supported me and so many others in our community through difficult times. Funds from the workshop will go towards Sacharja’s mother Ms. Pauline‘s back rent and medical bill fund. Ms. Pauline is an elderly, disabled black woman grandmother caregiver. To participate donate to the crowd fund at bit.ly/paulinehelp or on PayPal or Zelle to jetocean@pm.me and be sure to SCREENSHOT your donation. Then register at bit.ly/herbsforma, providing your name/email/access needs and uploading your screenshot of your donation. Image description in comments by @re_memberance

A few of my favorite words from one of my favorite Cancerian poets, two-headed wordsmith mrs. lucille clifton, on what would have been her 87th birthday.

WHAT RESEMBLES THE GRAVE BUT ISN’T
“Always falling into a hole, then saying “ok, this is not your grave, get out of this hole,” getting out of the hole which is not the grave, falling into a hole again, saying “ok, this is also not your grave, get out of this hole,” getting out of that hole, falling into another one; sometimes falling into a hole within a hole, or many holes within holes, getting out of them one after the other, then falling again, saying “this is not your grave, get out of the hole”; sometimes being pushed, saying “you can not push me into this hole, it is not my grave,” and getting out defiantly, then falling into a hole again without any pushing; sometimes falling into a set of holes whose structures are predictable, ideological, and long dug, often falling into this set of structural and impersonal holes; sometimes falling into holes with other people, with other people, saying “this is not our mass grave, get out of this hole,” all together getting out of the hole together, hands and legs and arms and human ladders of each other to get out of the hole that is not the mass grave but that will only be gotten out of together; sometimes the willful-falling into a hole which is not the grave because it is easier than not falling into a hole really, but then once in it, realizing it is not the grave, getting out of the hole eventually; sometimes falling into a hole and languishing there for days, weeks, months, years, because while not the grave very difficult, still, to climb out of and you know after this hole there’s just another and another; sometimes surveying the landscape of holes and wishing for a high quality final hole; sometimes thinking of who has fallen into holes which are not graves but might be better if they were; sometimes too ardently contemplating the final hole while trying to avoid the provisional ones; sometimes dutifully falling and getting out, with perfect fortitude, saying “look at the skill and spirit with which I rise from that which resembles the grave but isn’t!”-Anne Boyer via @jeauxzhee

My heart gets so full when I think back to my 9 month herbal journey with @lamalayerbalove. This journey was not a “class”, at least in the western sense. Learning was the knowledge of meeting the sacred like our ancestors once did. it was sacred ceremony of tending to our wounds, nourishing our dreaming and imagination. 9 months of unfolding and letting the plants do their work. I am so grateful to have been in a circle that was so real, raw and intimate in a way where we could show up as our full selves with our grief, rage, heartache, our loving, our joy, and our freedom. The medicine of this circle was trusting our inner knowing, embodying our truths, shaking loose shame, and surrendering to the alchemy of tears. Reclaiming our ancestral ways and remembering that not all was lost.

Even as someone who’s worked with plants for years, this journey brought me to hear them and feel them embodied in new ways. To witness and honor them as their own beings not designed to treat a “symptom”, but beings you want to be in deep and consistent relationships with. From nettles who became my ride or die and quite literally forced me to see my needs worth meeting. Lemon balm’s reminder that joy is a path to power. Epazote who helped me create safety within when I can’t control my surroundings. + so many more.

To my fellow seedlings, I shower you with gratitude for the ways in which you showed up for yourselves and your healing. It has freed me and our descendants are freer for it. Thank you for bearing witness to me breaking into a new being time and time and again and choosing to shower me with your medicine. So grateful our ancestors co-conspired to put us in space together. Love y’all so deeply!

And to you Xochicoatl @lamalayerbalove thank you for saying yes. Saying yes to your ancestors call to walk in your purpose as a steward of the land, of medicine, and liberation. Thank you for being SO real through it all + allowing us to truly see you. Your magic and your love and your intentionality in holding this space is apart of me forever. I love you!APPLICATION STILL OPEN TILL 2/15 in @lamalayerbalove’s bio, dm me if you’re interested and want to talk fundraising! by @re_memberance
