🛹 Don’t Kill Kenny! Nearly 2,000 people have signed a petition urging @lambeth_council to continue with its plans to restore Kennington Park’s historic 1970s skatebowl, as C20 Society has backed the grassroots campaign. The @friendsofkenningtonpark have been working with the Council for more than 5 years to bring ‘The Kenny’ back into full use, after its condition steadily declined and it has become increasingly unsafe to ride. Funding and contractors to deliver a restoration scheme were in place earlier this year, but the Council are now considering abandoning the project. Constructed by the The Great Outdoors Company and opened in 1978, Kennington Bowl rode a new wave of popularity in Britain for skating culture during the late 70’s and was funded by a £15 million GLC grant to counter issues of urban decay. It utilised the ‘Radical Banking’ system, developed by Lorne Edwards to make skateparks out of pre-cast modules, which could be readily assembled on site. This aimed to avoid the poor design and shoddy construction that plagued some other early examples and as such, is unique in UK skatepark architecture. A Lambeth spokesperson commented: “In light of the council’s financial position, and our responsibility to ensure we can protect the frontline services relied on by our most vulnerable residents, capital projects across Lambeth have been paused - this includes the skate park.” The heritage of early skate architecture has come increasingly into focus over the past decade, with the Rom Skatepark in Hornchurch listed Grade II in 2015 and the Livi Skatepark in Livingston listed Category B in 2024, the first to be nationally designated in England and Scotland respectively. 🗳️ Click the link in our bio to sign and share the petition to Save the Kenny Skatebowl, ahead of the next crunch council meeting on Nov 24th. Make sure to SIGN & SHARE the Friends of Kennington Park’s Change.org petition – over 1100 signatures now – let’s get to 2k! Just click the link in our friendsofkenningtonpark bio☝️ We’ve been working with @lambeth_council for years, on a plan to restore the park’s beloved skatebowl. Every signature strengthens our case with Lambeth – and helps us to convince them they MUST NOT ABANDON KENNY! More info on our website: kenningtonpark.org Thanks to @readanddestroy magazine for another amazing @namnus pic … another shot from this session with @robertdukesart featured in a @slamcityskates ad in #RADmagazine c91. 📸 Paul Sunman – Rob Dukes, Kennington, London, c91 Courtesy the Read And Destroy Archive #readanddestroyarchive #paulsunman #readanddestroymag #readanddestroy #robdukes #90sskateboarding #kenningtonbowl #kenningtonbanks #melongrab #slamcityskates #frontsidefriday #SaveKenny #skateboarding #kennington #kenningtonwhereitallstarted #londonskateboarding #KenningtonSkateBowl #ProtectOurParks #KeepKennyAlive #RestoreKenny #SkateHistory #CommunityNotCuts #saveourskatebowl #kenningtonpark #friendsofkenningtonpark #lovekenningtonpark #loveyourpark #lambethparks #lambeth by @readanddestroy
It’s Day 9 of our SAVE KENNY campaign! Here’s another fab photo by Tim Leighton Boyce from the October 1987 issue of @readanddestroy magazine, featuring Graeme ‘Mac’ McEachran in Kenny. ‘You’ve probably never seen a picture of Mac before. But if you know anything about skating you’ll have heard of him. He’s the freestyler and bank skater with the attitude of a vert man. He doesn’t show up at many competitions and he doesn’t go out to get coverage – but he does like to do McTwists on banks. When he feels like it’. And maybe frontside air walks too. Make sure to sign & share the Friends of Kennington Park’s Change.org petition – 1100 signatures so far – let’s see how high we can go! The more sigs we get, the more clout we’ll have in our discussions with @lambeth_council. After years of working together with them to get the park’s much-loved skatebowl properly fixed up, they are planning to ditch the renovation project. We need to persuade them NOT TO GIVE UP ON KENNY! So please click the link in our friendsofkenningtonpark bio☝️and SIGN & SHARE! Are you in the picture?? Have you signed and shared the Friends of Kennington Park’s Change.org petition? We’re over a thousand signatures now – let’s see if we can make it 2k! WHY DO YOU NEED TO SIGN?? Because every signature strengthens our case with @lambeth_council. We’ve been working together with them on this skatebowl renovation project and we need to persuade them not to abandon it now. So if you haven’t already, please – click the link in our friendsofkenningtonpark bio☝️ Did you know that Kennington Park’s iconic and much-loved skatebowl – affectionately known as Kenny – was built way back in the 1970s? It used the ‘Radical Banking’ system developed by Lorne Edwards – pre-cast modules, assembled on site. Kenny is one of the oldest skateparks in the UK – an iconic piece of British skateboarding history. So help us to change Lambeth’s mind by signing the petition NOW!
Let’s bring Kenny back! More info on our website: kenningtonpark.org Photo Tim Leighton-Boyce Courtesy the Read And Destroy Archive #readanddestroyarchive

Day 7 of SAVE KENNY … Time to share another fab photo, taken right here in Kenny … This shot of Simon Evans is by Tim Leighton-Boyce. It’s an unpublished out-take from the Kennington session for Simon’s interview in a 1992 issue of @readanddestroy magazine. Big shout-out thanks to Read and Destroy, @greyskatemag, and all the photographers who’ve shared their amazing pics for our campaign so far. In case you haven’t heard about it – We’ve been working together with @lambeth_council for more than 5 years to bring Kennington Park’s iconic and much-loved 1970s skatebowl back to life. There were contractors all lined up and ready to go early in the year, and then everything stopped dead. Earlier this week, we heard that they’ve dumped the project. So we’re redoubling our efforts. We want to show Lambeth what a terrible idea it is to abandon the renovation of our wonderful skatebowl. You can HELP US – PLEASE sign and share our Change.org petition. We’re in the upper 900s, and we need to get beyond 1k! Every signature strengthens our case with Lambeth. So if you haven’t already, please – click the link in our bio☝️
