POSTS STORIES REELS

If you’re new here, welcome. I thought it might be a good time to explain what this little corner of Instagram is all about.
I’m Teresa, a semi-retired special education teacher and Orton-Gillingham tutor who still gets excited about finding lessons, games, and routines that actually help struggling readers.
You won’t find perfectly styled classrooms or trendy teaching hacks here. You’ll find the activities I use with my own students, the resources I reach for again and again, and the ideas that have proven to be worth the time.
I only share what I actually use. If it doesn’t work in my lessons, it doesn’t make it onto my page.
One of the things I missed most after leaving the classroom was collaborating with other teachers. This account has become my way of finding that community again—sharing ideas, learning from others, and celebrating the little wins that make this work so rewarding.
If that’s the kind of content you’re looking for, I’m so glad you’re here. I’d love for you to introduce yourself in the comments and tell me what you teach or what brought you here. by @readwithmrsg

The Science of Reading is about phonics… but it’s also about SO much more!

At Read With Mrs. G, I believe in looking at the whole reader. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, oral language, morphology, and background knowledge all play an important role in becoming a skilled reader.

That’s why my lessons are intentional, systematic, and explicit. Each student starts where they are, and instruction builds from there.

I love using @imse_og resources to support structured literacy instruction, from phonemic awareness and phonics to dictation, decodable text, and fluency practice.

@projectreadai gives me another way to create targeted practice, reinforce skills, and provide reading opportunities that connect to students’ interests and instructional needs.

And @learning_ally is a valuable resource for supporting students’ access to grade-level content, building background knowledge, and developing vocabulary and comprehension while they continue working on their decoding skills.

These resources each bring something valuable to the table, but the most important piece is knowing my students, understanding what they need, and using the right tools to support their growth.

Because the goal isn’t simply to teach phonics or get through a scope and sequence.

It’s to build readers who can decode, read fluently, understand what they’re reading, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

That’s what we’re working toward at Read With Mrs. G! ❤️ by @readwithmrsg

Gobble up some spelling practice! 🦃

A little prep for our small groups this month using the @IMSE_og freebie Dictation Turkeys!

Students will:
🦃 Listen and repeat the word
🦃 Tap out the individual phonemes
🦃 Write one phoneme on each feather
🦃 Write the complete word
🦃 Transfer the word to their dictation page

I colored all the turkeys the same, so first things first… they’ll get to name their turkey! Also laminated each turkey so we can use them all month and saved for next year.

Same structured literacy routine, just a little Thanksgiving fun mixed in.

Happy Halloween! by @readwithmrsg

A little appreciation goes a long way! ❤️

Our Meals on Wheels staff surprised us with a special treat, and it was such a thoughtful gesture!

As many of you know, I volunteer Wednesday mornings, and it truly has become one of the highlights of my week. I have the same route each week, so I’ve gotten to know my people, and those familiar faces and conversations have become something I really look forward to.

Meals on Wheels is about so much more than delivering a meal. It’s also a wellness check, a friendly face, a quick conversation, and sometimes just knowing someone is looking out for you.

You don’t volunteer expecting anything in return, but it’s always nice to feel recognized and appreciated. I’m grateful to be part of an organization that makes such a difference in our community.

If you’ve been looking for a way to give back and have a little time to spare, I can’t recommend Meals on Wheels enough. It’s a wonderful way to support your community, and you might just find it becomes the highlight of your week, too! ❤️ by @readwithmrsg

“How do you see their mistakes when you’re tutoring virtually?” Great question!
Today’s virtual dictation focused on the C-le syllable using IMSE Lesson #69. I use my lesson plan to record the student’s spelling as they work. I say the word, they repeat it, tap the sounds, and spell it aloud after writing it in their own book. Meanwhile, I’m recording their responses and noting any errors.
Today, we had words where the errors were chopped and puzzle. We talked through the mistakes, made corrections, and reviewed what to look for in these words.
Those notes help me plan what comes next. This skill will be revisited in our next lesson so we can reinforce it and build accuracy.
Virtual tutoring still allows for intentional instruction and meaningful data collection. It’s all about having a system to track what students know, identify errors, and use that information to guide instruction.

Age and grade level aren’t the same thing! We meet students where they are in their reading journey, but they still deserve materials that match their age and interests.
One of my favorite features of @ProjectRead is the ability to create passages that follow the @IMSE_og scope and sequence while customizing the concept, length, and high-interest words.
And living in Wisconsin right now, it’s pretty hard to ignore the excitement of a possible Milwaukee Brewers World Series win! ⚾ Why not bring a little of that excitement into our reading practice?
Targeted instruction + age-respectful materials + student interests = a win in my book!

The Brewers are taking over our usual warm-up this week! ⚾ With all the baseball excitement, we’re playing Milwaukee Brewers trivia on Baamboozle. A little baseball fun before we get to work!

My only request? Add a Brewers jersey to the lineup! 💙💛#baamboozle #milwaukeebrewers by @readwithmrsg

This is what Read With Mrs. G is all about. 👇
I’m not here to share every new trend, activity, or resource that pops up in my feed. I’m here to share what I’ve actually found successful with my students.
You’ll hear me talk about IMSE, Learning Ally, and Project Read because these are tools that support my work with struggling readers.
IMSE provides the scope and sequence that guides my instruction. Project Read Tutor helps reinforce those skills and provides additional practice that aligns with the skills students are learning. Learning Ally gives students access to audiobooks that support access to grade-level content.
You’ll also see word chains, decodable texts, morphology activities, fluency practice, and plenty of review because these are the strategies and resources I use with my students.
After more than 20 years in the classroom and now working with readers through tutoring and intervention, I’ve learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We need to meet students where they are, figure out what they need next, and provide explicit, systematic instruction and meaningful practice to help them grow.
I won’t share a resource just because it’s trendy. I share what I’ve found useful, effective, and worth bringing to the table for my students.
That’s what you’ll find here: practical ideas, research-aligned resources, and strategies grounded in my work with real students.
Because every child deserves instruction that helps them move forward, and every teacher deserves tools they can put to work.
If you’re a teacher who believes in research and evidence-based reading instruction and celebrating every bit of progress, you’re in the right place. Let’s connect! by @readwithmrsg

Weekly progress monitoring

Our weekly ORF (oral reading fluency) check-in is a quick way to see how students are growing and identify areas that may need a little more attention.

The race bib is a reminder that we’re working toward a PR (personal record) — improving our own reading rate, not competing with anyone else. The visual helps students see their growth and celebrate their progress!

Do we hit a PR every week? Nope, and that’s okay! That’s exactly why we check in weekly. We’re looking for a trend line, not just one score.

If growth isn’t steadily happening, that’s valuable information for ME, too. It’s my cue to step back, reevaluate my instruction, and figure out what might be missing.

And honestly, there is nothing more exciting than seeing a child make progress and watching them take ownership of that success! When students can see their own growth and celebrate how far they’ve come, those wins become even more meaningful. ❤️

Progress monitoring isn’t just about measuring student growth. It’s about making sure my instruction is moving them forward.

A little Halloween twist on our reading practice! 👻 This week, we’re taking a step back from our usual scope and sequence to expose students to silent letters. These IMSE decodables are perfect for that extra practice, and I love that they’re mini books that are easy to print and assemble.

My little finishing touch? Duck Tape on the spine to cover the staples and give them a polished look!

🔥 Virtual S’mores, anyone?

I usually use my S’mores Three-Letter Blend word sort in person, so figuring out how to make it work virtually took a little creativity! My InSwan document camera came to the rescue, and we brought our campfire right to the screen. 🔥

We reviewed all seven three-letter blends, read the words, and built our S’mores one word at a time. Once each S’more was complete, students practiced reading the words from bottom to top before moving on to the next blend. This resource follows IMSE scope and sequence and aligns with Lesson #59.

Word sorts are such a great way to reinforce phonics skills, provide repeated reading practice, and keep review fresh. And when I can’t find a resource that fits what I need? I make my own!

🍫 This S’mores resource features Bunny on a Cloud clip art and is a FREEBIE in my TPT store!
