The drama is drama-ing over here 😬

Nearly all kittens born outdoors will contract some type of parasite within their first few weeks of life (either from momma or their environment). For kittens to get the nutrition they need to grow up big and strong, those pesky little parasites gotta go!

Unfortunately for the kittens, anti-parasite meds are pretty darn disgusting. SORRY BABIES! 🫣

My dear friends, I wish I had better news.

Over the last couple months, Olympia has had a host of medical issues. From troubling blood work to auto-immune conditions, my sweet girl wasn't feeling her best. On Friday, the 13th of June, things went from bad to worse. After about 10 weeks of searching for answers, Olympia was diagnosed with the wet form of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). If you aren't familiar, FIP is a brutal virus that affects 1% of all cats, typically those under two years of age. There's no definitive test, and each case is unqiue. By the time a diagnosis can be made, the cat is already fighting for their life.

I instantly knew the severity. As a girl, my family lost our cat, Jelly, to FIP. He was just a year and a half old. At that time, FIP was a death sentence. There was very little known about it and zero chance of survival. Now, 13 years later, with international drug trials and an FDA exception granting provisional access to the medicine in the US, FIP has a survival rate of 80%. Let me tell you, I clung to that statistic like my own life depended on it.

Yesterday morning, despite a week of steady treatment that had her perking up little by little, Olympia suddenly and rapidly declined. In the end, she exhibited symptoms of wet, dry, and neurological FIP. There was no choice to make. There was simply the reality of the situation. I believe she knew her moment was coming. I'm convinced she chose to hold on so we could have seven more days together at home. Her final gift to me was borrowed time.

As my heart shattered, I held her in my arms. I thanked her for sharing her immeasurable light with the world and reminded her of how deeply loved she is and forever will be. Surrounded by her momma, bonus momma @lindsaybiggers, and her vet team @partnersanimalhospitalnoda, Her Majesty, Olympia Marie Karma Windsor-Wayne curled up in her trusty emotional support bag and welcomed peace.
