‘The Lilac Panthers’.. my unofficial nickname for our @nubuke_foundation booth for @africabasel… brings together my archival work ‘The Dialectic of Jubilation: Afro Funk Lessons (Pompidou maquette)’ 2005-2007, never before exhibited made in situ when the original drawings were lost in transit; alongside two new works from 2025; ‘Portes-oranges Rainbow’ and ‘Forests of Lake Volta’. My latest video installation expands my doctoral work on ‘memory, material culture and post-independence West Africa’ to explore the legacy of President Kwame Nkrumah’s visions for the Akosombo Dam, - the three forest ranges submerged in the 1960s to create the dam, newly discovered as a trove of indescribable wealth and the dangerous work of harvesting these logs undertaken by a team of highly skilled Ghanaian geologists and scuba divers. @realreez Kwaku Dapaah Opoku’s beautiful installation of revolutionary women - Nyaniba Nkrumah, Yaa Asantewaa, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti and his own mother, frames the view to my work made with Yemesi-Ransom Kuti and features Fela, Traore and Kwame Nkrumah. Opoku’s work is made using timber salvaged from Lake Volta, the images are etched with fire, recovering the memory of colonial acts of violence, in particular in relation to the city of Benin and its stolen Bronzes. Collectively, our work for Nubuke constitutes an action of making, mapping, recovering and reviewing. Counter-Histories in both theory and practice. by @realreez
Introducing Kwaku Dapaah Opoku, a Ghanaian-born artist, designer, musician, and environmental researcher, whose work explores identity, philosophy, and the intricate relationship between people and nature. Based in Basel, Switzerland, Kwaku’s art is informed by his rich background in music and his deep commitment to sustainability. Kwaku’s creative practice focuses on the reclamation of rare materials, such as wood from submerged forests in Ghana, to explore themes of history, healing, and memory. His work speaks to the violent history of the 1897 British punitive expedition in Benin City and highlights the power of art to restore and reclaim lost cultural histories. In a few days, Kwaku will present his works at Africa Basel, showcasing reclaimed materials in a new light. His thought-provoking video installation will also provide a closer look at the meticulous process of harvesting these materials in Ghana. Join us from 17–22 June 2025 in Basel to experience Kwaku’s transformative and thought-provoking works. #NubukeFoundation #AfricaBasel #ArtBasel by @realreez
