#CoffeeAndCurrentlyReading + #LifeUpdate . I haven't posted as much as I want to, because the October slide is hitting me hard this year. (My chronically ill friends know the struggle!) I love autumn, so it's hard when I don't have the energy to enjoy it the way I want to. I have been loving trying autumn drinks from my favorite coffee shops, watching and rewatching autumn/horror movies, and of course reading as much as I can. . I finished Mazywood by Tananarive Due the other night and loved it, so I'm excited to be starting The Reformatory. So many of you have recommended it to me! I'm also still reading Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie and started The Hundred Years War On Palestine by Rashid Khalidi. Last but not least, I'm buddy reading The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu on Libby with my husband. My coffee was a Count Chocula Latte (toasted nut fudge espresso, chocolate syrup, and almond milk). It was so good and not too sweet! . QOTD: What are you reading and what are you enjoying most about this month? . ID: Three books (Midnight's Children, The Reformatory, and The Hundred Years War On Palestine) are arranged on a pink bedspread. A white woman's hand holds a coffee cup. πŸ“š BOOK REVIEW πŸ“š The Other Side Of The Butterfly by C. Helen Contemporary Fiction . The Other Side Of The Butterfly is a story of two sisters, Grace and Melody Braxton. Grace is suffering from an undiagnosed chronic illness that has forced her to give up her career and left her bedbound. Melody is struggling with mental illness and a toxic relationship. As family discord and their individual traumas shake their foundation, they need to learn to lean on each other and keep up hope. As someone with both chronic illness and mental illness, I was easily able to relate to various aspects of both Grace's and Melody's characters. I appreciated how both sisters grew throughout the novel. Grace learned self advocacy and that life isn't over with chronic illness. Melody learned that it's okay to ask for help and that there are second chances in life. Although it was difficult to read about the extreme ableism that Grace faced, I think it was an accurate picture of the ableism and cruelty that so many in the chronically ill/disabled community sadly have to face. I loved the special meanings of the butterfly metaphor. . If you enjoy contemporary adult fiction and own voices books (C. Helen has chronic illnesses), I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Other Side Of The Butterfly. . I want to thank @c.helenauthor for sending me this copy of her book and the goodies pictured. I look forward to see what she will write next! . ID: A paperback copy of The Other Side Of The Butterfly rests on a pink duvet. πŸ“š BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2026 πŸ“š . Banned Books Week began in the early 1980s as a call to action in response to rising book bans. Now, over 40 years later, numbers of books banned continue to rise. It is imperative that we speak against these bans and promote the liberty to read. This year's theme of the week is "Let books be. Protect the freedom to read." . Today, I'm sharing some frequently challenged and banned Books from my shelves: πŸ“š Looking For Alaska by John Green πŸ“š The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood πŸ“š The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald πŸ“š 1984 by George Orwell πŸ“š A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini πŸ“š Beloved by Toni Morrison πŸ“š The Color Purple by Alice Walker . QOTD: Do you have a favorite banned book? . ID: 1. Flatlay of the books mentioned above on a circular wooden table 2. Mochi, a black cat, standing on the books and looking at the camera . I'm also still struggling through The Mysteries Of Udolpho (I'm so close to the end!) and enjoying Midnight's Children. . πŸ–₯ What I'm watching: AHS 13, Buffy, rewatching Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror episodes, and hopefully Backrooms and Nosferatu this week . 🎧 What I'm listening to: Mostly autumnal playlists, including artists like Noah Kahan, Girl In Red, Lana Del Rey, Lord Huron, Phoebe Bridgers, etc. . ✨️ Glimmers: Leaves changing color, the feeling of slipping a cozy sweater on, the scent of autumn air, the taste of a warm latte and pumpkin and apple flavored things, the purring of my cats... . QOTD: What are you reading, watching, etc.? . ID: A white woman's hand holds a special edition of The Lottery And Other Stories by Shirley Jackson over a pink duvet. . Last night, I was able to attend John Green's book tour stop for Hollywood, Ending in Pittsburgh. I was delighted to finally attend one of John Green's events after following him for so many years. I began watching Hank and John's YouTube videos and became a part of the Nerdfighter community in high school and began reading John's books in college, so I've been a fan for quite a long time. John is just as thoughtful, eloquent, and funny as he comes across in his videos. I really enjoyed his dialogue with Mario Rossero, the director of the Andy Warhol Museum. The audience participation bits and q&a session were so much fun, too. There is something very special about being in a room of book lovers and art lovers and I feel very lucky to have experienced this particular gathering of people. It also gave me the needed nudge to keep making art and to remain hopeful in the face of an uncertain future. . I also have to give a shout out to The Byham for having excellent accessibility and Riverstone Books (my favorite indie bookstore in Pittsburgh) for putting on a great event! . ID: 1.
